If you want to do anything with your life you can't be independent. I remember the first games that were ever made were one-man jobs. Nowadays you need people to make character models, design levels, de-bug everything and FMV movies.
Anyone who knew a little bit about programming could make a game; have a look at the gaming industry now. Huge buildings with thousands of workers just to make about 3 games. It shows how much things have changed.
But that's not it, everything people want to do when they're older can't just include them. Independence isn't an option.
I've wanted to write and publish a book for ages now, and I've finally got around to it. But am I going to publish it? Of course not! Yes, I write the whole thing, but I'll need a lot to publish it. First of all a loan. How on earth am I, a 14 year old, convince a bank that I need however much money I need? I won't be able to. Plus I have to find a publisher. So you can't even write and sell a book independently.
Now, making a website, a lot of people in these forums want to make websites. But unless it's a personal website you'll need graphics designers, writer and more depending of what kind of website you want to make. Making and running the whole independently just isn't possible.
The days of building business' is a thing of the past. Which is very sad. I'd love to build something with complete independence, just looking at something and saying "That was all me." Just being able to look at a business and take complete credit for it. There are few people who can say that, if any, now.
I'm just wondering, does independence have a place in the future? I can't see it. You can make a difference to something, but not make a difference completely independently.

Tycoon 2 may be rubbish (if you have the original) but look how successful it is.

One of my favourite shops in Nottingham is an independent one - the owners have built it up themselves and it's very successful and popular. Same goes for publishing - this isn't a rare thing in America in comic books, in fact some of the greatest comic books today started off like that ! All you need is the money to do it - in the case of one guy, Terry Moore, he worked for ages to finance a 3000 print run of his comic and then it took off - that one comic alone is now worth over £100 !
Determination is everything.
