This sounds a lot like "suspend to RAM", although a PC doesn't power off completely when suspended.

My Compaq Ipaq (a PDA) uses flash memory. The whole version of the Windows operating system (called PocketPC or something) is located in the equivalent of RAM memory so its instantanious. You turn in on and its already loaded. Theres no booting up or powering off - theres just an on/off button.

Havent heard about it being available in desktops but i guess anythings possible these days.

It does mean though, that if anything gets corrupt in the operating system you're left with nothing more than a pocket sized paperweight. Updates are done via flashing the memory which in itself is pretty unreliable so you need reliable software.

Anything other than the operating system is stored in the normal way. My Ipaq has 32meg of memory and i use an external CompactFlash card to store anything else.
