"I'm quite capable of dressing myself, and feeding myself, so I wasn't really bothered that mummy was gone. I was a little disappointed by my discovery that Hollywood movies do not always mirror real life though. I expected that I'd have so kind of wacky adventures, no doubt involving large amounts of slap-stick comedy, like that movie, 'Police Academy'. Instead it was relatively dull, and failed to raise a smile, like that movie, 'Home Alone'."
Rufus is now living with family friends.
Unfortunately, events like this are not as uncommon as they should be, and not all people are able to look after themselves as well as Jill's son.
Graeme McJeffers was in a similar position last Christmas.
"It was strange." said Graeme "Even though my mother wasn't there, I felt that I had to go about my regular daily duties. I was still leaving the house at 7:30 each morning, and not staying out any later than usual. I didn't want to attract attention to my situation."
Graeme was eventually caught out, by Howard Jones.
"Well, Graeme was normally so clean, so when I saw him sitting at his desk with spaghetti sauce all around his mouth, I knew something was up. I spoke to a number of other staff members, and our secretary informed me that she had been asked by Graeme to tie his shoe laces for him every day for a week. Worried, I sent the police to investigate."
When police officers arrived at Graeme's Hertford home they found that much of the washing-up had been left undone, but Graeme was otherwise coping fine.
Graeme's mother, June, arrived back days later and when questioned by police she explained the situation to them.
"He's 27 years old, for Christ's sake! He should be able to look after himself by now! I've been on holiday, to Corfu. I'm sure I told the neighbours."
With parents like these, endangering the lives of our countries youth, what hope do we as a nation have?
