"This new UI on XP - tell me about it?"

Hey. I'm curious about the new MFC (presumably) UI on WindowsXP. At first I saw it on OfficeXP, thinking it was office native, but then I saw it on SmartFTP and I'm wondering what it's all about. Is this going to replace the old-style UI? I hope so!

Yeah, MFC is totally backward compatible. You can still run Windows 3.11 compiled binaries under like, XP, and have them displayed as any win32 application linked to MFC. That's one of the cool things about Windows, unlike GTK (you can't run a GTK1-linked app with the GTK2 libraries)..

The pretty menus existed only in Office XP but the API (application programmer interface: MFC in this case) was opened to the "public" developer community and people like that FTP program can link to it instead of the usual code.

And I probably have a point, but I can't remember what it was. I'm.. slightly toasted. :)

My guess is that it's just extentions to the existing mfc api's. It's been around for a while, and only Office XP and as you say SmartFTP make use of it afaik.
