The amount of times I have written this track title on this site is, well, a lot. People are always asking what our favourite songs are, and mine has to be the one and only Stand Inside Your Love, by the Smashing Pumpkins. I know I go on, but thats only because their music is the first that has actualy made me realise the power, emotion and above all influence that music can hold.

There are several things that for me make up my admiration and love for the Smashing Pumpkins music. Firstly, they could all play their insturments brilliantly - not the usual riffs and stuff - nothing world breakign, but brilliant enough for their concentration to lie elsewhere. Just listen to Starla, Silverf*ck, Blew Away, Tales Of A Scorched Earth and For Martha to hear a full range of brilliant instrumental playing, and a range of styles - all performed and perfected so well its amazing. They combined quality rock with quieter, more peaceful sounds, and the change from Gish (first album) to Machina (last) is astonishing. Machina has electorincal influences all over it, and yet it has still a loving touch to it, despite some flawed songs. The second thing I love is the lyrics. Almost all of Billy Corgans/James Ihas lyrics convey some sense of personality, whether it be utter anger and despair (XYU, For Martha - both toaly different songs) or elation (Today, Silverfu*k - as far as I can tell!) and most of all, love, being and feeling. Whir, Blew Away, Landslide, Zero, 1979, Girl Named Sandoz and Stand Inside Your Love all convey a sense of being, a personality, and all in a different sense - sinister, obvious, loving, calm, regretful and most of all, I think, appreciation, of life and all it holds - even the bad things.

Anyway, thats enough of my Pumpkins in general obsession (!) My favourite song is Stand Inside Your Love, simply beacuse it is so, well, perfect. It totaly blew me away when I heard it first, and yet it still holds power even now. It is an odd mix - In Billy Corgans own words, of rock and love song lyrics. Both the music and the lyrics are incredibly powerful, and gelled together as they are, they are astounding. For me. I have heard other songs that contain far more powerful and savage music, and lyrics that are lovely to hear, but none, not one, has the completeness that this song has. The lyrics are all of love, appreciation, and above all adoration, total and utter love for one person - an unattainable thing, some might say, but here it is conveyed to me in the most perfect way. They are calm, beautifuly mixed with the music, and above all, just make me know what is being sung about, even though I have never felt it.

Coupled with this is the rocky music. I love the goold old guitar riff, and rock is my favourite genre. But nowhere else have I heard such a wonderful mix of powerful, technicly excellent, and lovely piece of heartfelt rock music combined with such beautiful lyrics. None of its incredibly complicated, nor to simple, but it strikes exactly what the song is about - or rather what it feels. The guitars from the start, strumming away, to the almost 'high' solo near the end emphasise the sheer depth, the glorious pwer of the feeling in the lyrics - The video suits this perfectly (an odd but amazing watch for me too). I don't conect this song with anybody either - it is just me that loves it, not the person thats depressed, in 'love', angry, tired, sad or bored. It is me. I, myself at all times, that loves this song - it does not seem so appealing just beacuse I can 'relate' to its message. I know its meassage, and I still love the song.

This song is quite simply beautiful for me. I have had 'favourite' songs before, but none have touched me in the way this has. Other Pumpkins and bands tracks have come close, but none have the wonderful mix of powerful lyrics and music - other love 'ballads' have no power for me in comparison to this. It is all at once, a heartfelt, glorious, modest, powerful and most of all loving song. It makes me cry sometimes. Its just simply amazing.
