I just had a filling: my first one ever. Didn't hurt very much, which was a bit disappointing. Anyway, my brother has a theory that as soon as you turn 18 and stop receiving free dental care, the dentist suddenly finds a whole bunch of work that needs doing. He had quite a lot of evidence to back this claim up (first time for everything). Sure enough this WAS the first time I'd been to the dentist as an adult (after, ahem, a five year gap).

Is it true? Has anyone else been ripped off by their dentist? And am I allowed to eat after having a filling?

Heh heh! I've had a few fillings in my day...
Yes, you can eat after a filling although you're recommended to leave it for about an hour of two for it to settle down. With the advances in medical technology these days, no-one should be scared of going to the dentist - I had to have a wisdom tooth pulled out about 6 months ago and it didn't hurt a bit! Then again, my dentist is a legend!
