As my lecturer once said as a joke, our point is to live and die, and loads of boring stuff in between. Death obviously affects us all and at most times, we like to forget it.
It’s also frightening how death can ruin the most perfect of days.

I started off well. Most of my assignments are near completion and then because a lesson is cancelled, my friend group and another classmates group started to get to know each other. It was a great laugh. Now the class is so much friendlier and welcoming. Anyway we’re at Adam’s bike and a guy hits the speed ramp at 30 miles per hour and the bike flips him on his head. For a second I found it funny but then the shock hits you. This guy would be dead if it wasn’t for his helmet. He got up with 30 of us helping him, which is a good site to see. Then Adam decided to go careful on the way home. This makes it obvious we ARE afraid of death. Those who say they aren’t either loony or Christian. Although I’m Christian and I’m afraid.

About an hour ago I got a phone call. My 80-year-old Nan is having heart surgery at this moment. Last year and the year before that, relatives died around this time. I have to say there are only 7 relatives I care about deeply and she is one of them. Again this got me thinking. I am 18 soon and that according to average gives me about 50 years left to live. All there is to look forward to be married, have kids, and grandkids. Then there is only death. My other Nan is also close to death. It makes me wonder how close I am. By accident, by disease or just a peaceful death? My best friend I have known since I moved to Bristol got knocked over by a car but survived. So did others at my school years ago. With death surrounding you, you can’t help but ponder when your day is coming. My advice is to ignore my lecturers phrase. You can have a good time in between if you make it that way. Live for now, don’t care about the consequences because before you know it you could be staring death in the face and wish you had done more.

If this doesn’t make much sense then I am sorry. This is the first time I have written something like this and today got me thinking. Thank you for reading.

The worst day of my life was when I realised my own mortality for the first time. It's inevitable that we will die and there really is nothing that anyone can do to prevent it. This is a scary concept and the major reason that so many people embrace religion. Anyway that isn't the topic for debate.

In essence: fear of death often makes people fear to live.

But we should try. For life is such an impossible absurdity that there must be some point to it.

I liked what you said, but not in any cruel way. And it can be depressing to think about it, but it's weird 'cos, have any of you ever thought about it and gone ''that'' deep into thinking about it? (Hope that made sense!!)
Last time I thought about it, I got lost & couldn't even explain what I was thinking! But, one of the questions that is ALWAYS gonna bother me is: What happens 'after' death? That's where I get lost! Do we just sleep 4ever and ever? Or get reincarnated or WHAT? That question really annoys me. Anyone else?!

And MandaTare, I hope your family stays well. I know that's not really gonna make a difference, but really I do. :-)

I'm not being funny here, but when you're cycling up a ramp that fast, you have to understand the risks, so it wouldn't really be a surprise if he was killed. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for cycling up ramps and the such like, but you can't say that you didn't expect it at all. Note: I'm not taking a shot at you, just making a point.

Only to an extent.

Remember a particular advert by the British Heart Foundation?

"Live life for the moment. I mean, you've got to haven't you? You could get hit by a bus tomorrow"

"We're doing all we can to combat Britain's Number One killer... Are You?"

We are all young, and to use death seems a long way off. When we get much older, I believe we begin to appreciate life and death and the part we play in this world. By the time you reaches old age, you are at ease with the notion of dying.
