Indeed, nothing gets them scientists working harder than a B-52 bomber pounding thier labs.
It would be nice if we didn't have war, but pacifism would soon be seen as unpopular if there were suddenly three different rightwing/extreemist countries attacking us.

So have I. I worked for three days on the 6-2 shift at Benson Crisps in Kirkham.
If you want to see losers, go work there. I think I got £3.18 an hour...

Scientific and technological progress.
Sad, yet true.
Then civilisations warred over territory, which is natural enough, but the ethic behind it had changed. War wasn't about survival, it was about power.
The Roman's stormed europe for power.
The German's did the same.
You ask what is it good for? That all depends on what side you're fighting on doesn't it.
Say there is a group of people who hate you, make no reasonable effort to befriend your land, and oppose you at every turn. They start to raid border towns because they believe you to be weak. They are unrepentant and aggressive, and if left to their own devices, will only grow in courage until they invade you. The only sensible solution is to invade them pre-emptively. Hit them in defence of your own people, destroy their resolve before they do too much harm.
War is the last resort, but a necessary one to protect the citizens from further harm or even oppression. To the other side, war is about the resoluton of the dispute between you and the neighbours you hate.
For the Germans in WWII, war was about making Germany the leading centre of a united europe. Being at the helm, and being the most powerful force in the world. To everyone else, it was a fight for freedom against opprension and dictatorship.
Sometimes war is for food, sometimes war is for power, sometimes war is for your rights, sometimes war is for freedom.
Almost always, it could have been avoided, but almost always it becomes necessary because one side or the other is unreasonable.
