The Gaming Olympics will be held at the NEC Birmingham for the first time in April 2001.

There are 4 Categories:

Handheld
Console
PC
Arcade

Each Main Category is further sub-divided into other disciplines.

Handheld:
Gameboy
GBA
GameGear

Console:
DC
PS2
N64

PC:
Win Games (Bundled with O/S)
Stand Alone Games (Packaged)

Arcade:
Static Games (pressing buttons)
Interactive Games (full body interaction with machine)

As yet, the IOC has not yet revealed which games are to be tested within each discipline, which has already caused some controversy. The 'games' are to be disclosed circa February 2001 but it is believed that three main developers will be involved:

Capcom
Electronic Arts
Rare

Skills that will be tested are :

Hand/Eye co-ordination
Hi-Scores
Style/Gaming Approach

Each country will be allowed to submit two entrants per discipline, and individuals are allowed to enter more than one discipline, up to a maximum of four individual disciplines.

186 countries are expected to be involved. Method of applying for squad status are as yet unclear, it is believed that in GB regional heats will be held sometime in January.

There are no age restrictions, but there are restrictions on height, weight, criminal convictions and being an Ant.

The FantasyMeister channel?

I saw that once! I was just flicking through the channels at my parents house late one night, when I found this channel. After a few minutes it disappeared though.

Update:

EA have announced that a FIFA type title will be available for the PC gaming discipline, but it will NOT be one of the current editions available on the market, it will be a 'specially designed' Olympic version, whatever that may mean.

No news from Capcom or Rare.

Rumour has it from the IOC that the games in each discipline will not all be sports based, as the idea is to explore all of the skills necessary to be an Olympic Gamer. Application forms for squad status are now available from the IOC direct, although for some countries the appropriate organisations have yet to be set up to receive the completed forms. Great Britain is one of these countries.
