Indeed. But ska punk is blending ska with punk. Ska is usually (in my opinion) very cheesy. So's a lot of ska punk... but not all.

Anyway. Ska doesn't always have brass in it. Operation Ivy. Early 80's band (featured members of Rancid, who are pretty well known now). They had no brass. The big standout feature of ska songs is they generally have chords with more power on the second and fourth chords... I know what I mean even if you don't...
Anyhoo. Older ska bands often used keyboards. Nowadays these have mostly been replaced by brass (certainly in the Ska-Punk world). Oh. And the Clash had ska influences. Not in all songs, but some.
Ska-punk bands:
Lightyear
Big D and the Kids Table
Less Than Jake
Operation Ivy
Mouthwash (70's stylee ska though...)
Capdown (Ska mixed with punk-hardcore though... AKA Ska'rdcore)
Vodoo Glow Skulls
Green Days song 'King For A Day' has hefty ska influence too... NOFX also have some pretty ska orientated songs... a lotta punk rock bands play ska songs occasionaly now for some reason...
Anyhoo. Hope that helped.
