The Rise and fall of Special Reserve; My first post on UKChatforums; My campaign for fair judging of a certain popular competition; The Notable Hunter chronicles starring Dark Edgy and Dringo; Making new online friends; My first gameaday win and claiming my first prize - Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 for PC. All these events have happened here in my last era of gaming. I'm not talking about the last console war generation, but instead about the way I play games.

Those who know anything about me here will know I'm a keen Nintendo fan who supported them throughout the dark ages where Nintendo consoles and games only sold to a hardcore whereas Playstation seemed to appeal to almost anyone with a pulse. I started as a bit of a fanboy. My first post being about Pokémon Yellow in the original Pokémon Yellow forum* and from there I ventured into every console war thread I could to join the ongoing battle.

When I worked at Game, my head could no longert grasp the point of the console war. I abused my staff discount as best as I could to get as many GameCube, GBA, XBOX and PC titles as I could and virtually ignored the PS2 section. I managed to single-handedly sell more copies of a shortly recalled cheats disc for Pro Evo 3 in my region which resulted in myself and my colleagues getting a free copy of the game each...which meant I had to buy a PS2...and that is where my console war began to end.

My brother already had a PS2 of his own but having the fault many PS2 owners seemed to suffer as the console just exceeded its warranty, I thought it best to get my own. I eventually built up a small collection of games which I have to admit I rarely play, but they're enjoyable all the same**.

Since we entered the current 'next gen' era where Wii dominates the console charts and DS currently 'pwns***' the PSP, I should be very happy. Nintendo are back on top! Ok, yes I am happy but I'm also happy that Microsoft are doing well, and despite it not following in its predecessor's footsteps, am happy that Playstation 3 is also doing well.

This new attitude of mine is what takes me to my new era of gaming. My hunger for the latest new releases and gadgetry has now become a slight craving for a snack, and as a result, large lists of new release 'AAA' titles no longer makes me want want want, but instead makes me consider whether or not the games are really worth playing at Ł30-Ł40 price tags.

The result of this is that I still haven't bought Star Wars: Force Unleashed, could not think of more than 2 titles that I want for any system as Christmas presents. I'm more into buying 'Classic' range games or waiting for the games I want to come down in price. I even resorted to selling a load of GameCube, Xbox and Xbox 360 games on Ebay (was better than the crap prices Game and Gamestation give for games).

Don't get me wrong, I haven't grown out of games and my taste in games has only altered slightly. I still throughly enjoyed Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy, and my favourite Nintendo game is still Super Mario Bros. I still enjoy Halo 3 and Duke Nukem 3D on Xbox 360 is quickly becomming my most played Arcade title (despite having it on PC for years).

I'm still playing games as much as I can when I'm free to do so. I've recently spent a couple hours re-playing Luigi's Mansion and aim to get through a load of my GameCube games again. I'm also pacing myself through the Phoenix Wright trilogy ****, Zelda: The Phantom Hourglas and Final Fantasy 3 & IV on DS.

I'll never grow out of games. I've just hit my excitement peak and am now entering a spending trough - which bares no correlation with the iminent recession. Like UKChatforums I have made a transition from one era to the next. Who knows where the journey will take me next? Maybe I'll get a DS Lite. MAybe I'll venture into High-Definition TV and Playstation 3. For now I'll start enjoying what I've got and not what I could get. Like Nintendo's virtual console proves, there's no rush to be first in line for the new stuff. The hunger has gone so now I can get my enjoyment by playing games, instead of primarily buying new games.
