And I have to say, after watching it, I'm very impressed - why can't there be matches like there were there in the WWE these days? Only a year and a half ago, but so much has changed in the WWE.
The Dudley Boyz -vs- X-Factor
Great match to start things off - nobody was particularly outstanding but both teams worked very well together, and in the end, with a helping hand from Albert, distracting the referee, Justin Credible and X-Pac hit the double-Super-kick on Bubba to win the match. The Dudleyz ended up putting X-Pac through a table in the end though, so that got the crowd going.
Rhyno -vs- Raven
This one was for the Hardcore Title, and all I can say is - What. A. Match. - It really was brilliant. Some top quality moves from both men, and Rhyno goring himself into a 'shopping cart' was quite funny. He eventually won it with The Gore on Raven though, and this made me wonder - why aren't there Hardcore matches in the WWE any more? Top match.
Chris Jericho -vs- William Regal
Remember the Duchess of Queensbury? Well, this was the controversial match that she helped Regal to win in against Jericho. Jericho had the match won 3 or 4 times, but the Duchess kept on making up new rules - which eventually led to Jericho putting her in the Walls of Jericho, and Paul Heyman calling him a national disgrace. Funny.
Shane McMahon -vs- Big Show
Just another Hardcore match really - Vince has just had WCW bought right from under his nose by Shane, and they're at war again. Vince then puts Big Show and Shane in a Last Man Standing match, just to get his son destroyed. It backfires though, as Test holds down Big Show and Shane jumps 50 foot from the top of the TitanTron 'onto' Big Show. That one really got the crowd going, and it also got J.R. raving on about his memories of other big bumps in the WWF history.
Chris Benoit -vs- Kurt Angle
This was the Ultimate Submission match that was like an Iron Man match, but with submissions. I was very impressed with the performance of both men, and I think they are both still assets to the WWE, but this match lasted just a little too long. I love to watch Benoit -vs- Angle, but not for 30 minutes. Benoit wins in Sudden Death after Benoit is discovered to have tapped AFTER the timer had finished the match at 4-3, making it 3-3 again, and allowing the match to continue.
Matt Hardy -vs- Christian -vs- Eddie Guerrero
Exciting, high-flying, and generally a great match to watch, and with interferences from Jeff and Egde - the only problem with the ending was that Matt Hardy won. I found it hilarious that Jeff managed to miss the Swnaton Bomb on both Christian and Eddie Guerrero by about 2 or 3 inches. Prancing idiot. Good match though, and Edge's spear on Matt was particularly good.
Austin & Triple H -vs- Undertaker & Kane
The main event was the most exciting out of them all. Kane had a broken arm but still fought, and this added to the excitement overall. I was very impressed with Austin and Triple H, which isn't something you hear me saying often, but they did work very well together. Vince McMahon ended up costing Taker and Kane the match with a Sledgehammer shot to Kane, but that helped Triple H and Austin to become even better heels.
Overall, Backlash 2001 was a great event to watch, and I'm sure if the WWE Main events these days were anything like it, then the WWE would have a lot more fans and viewers. That's my opinion on it all anyway.
(Pretty pointless topic this, but hey, I'm off school and very bored. :-D)
> Oh and that Ultimate Submission match ruled.
Indeed...so my revised ultimate match (after the WWE made such a poor attempt at Benoit vs RVD which SHOULD have been a classic) is now an ultimate submission three-way dance between Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle and Chris Candido.
