I might be wrong but I believe the people in America cast their votes for electors and they decide who the president and vice president are. There are 538 elected representatives so to win the election one of the candidates needs to win over half that number, which is 270 odd.
These representatives arent spread out equally among the states because some states are much larger than others in terms of population. Here's a map showing the number of representatives in each state. And here you can see which states were won during the last election between Bush and Kerry.

Now just North Carolina. Most likely will also go to McCain.

McCain projected to win Montana (3)
2 more states to go, everyone was watching Indiana for a long time, I'm surprised it ended up going to Obama. Not surprised about Alaska or Montana. Although McCain won a lot of states, in a lot of cases it was with a smaller majority than 4 years ago.
Missouri (11) and North Carolina (15) are still about 50/50
But i see this more of a poison chalace. Obama has a lot ot deal with, fail and republicans will start gaining ground. Succeed and he'll make it as one of the best presidents.
