"Well, I've been thinking about that. You know how I like to base games on the stuff I used to do as a kid? Like playing sardines in a wardrobe and hide and seek in the woods, stuff like that?"
Yes.
"Well, my next game is going to be based on 'Spin the Bottle', a kind of Tactical Espionage Hide The Sausage type game, but with less Tactical Espionage, I'm getting a bit fed up with it you see."
That sounds, um, great, will Snake be in it?
"Yes, but not the one you're thinking of."
I see. Will this be another PS2 exclusive?
"By no means. I've been looking at the GameBoy Advance as my next platform to develop for. I've been tinkering around with it and recently developed a gadget that makes a GBA detect light, which is rather clever because it saves you using your eyes to do that for you. Next, I'm going to make it vibrate!"
Vibrate?
"Yes! I'm really excited about it. It opens up a whole new world of uses for the GBA, particularly in connection with my new game. I've already sent a prototype to Nintendo for them to assess and they've given some helpful feedback."
Good feedback?
"They said 48 kilograms was a little on the heavy side and that if I could manage to get it to fit into a normal household garage that would be a little better, but on the whole they were positive about it."
Any other radical ideas for this handheld?
"I'm working on a hoover attachment."
Going back to Metal Gear Solid now, one question that gamers have been asking is why didn't you include the VR missions with the original Sons of Liberty game? Was there a time constraint?
"In a manner of speaking yes. Konami were pressurising us for a release date, and after 2 years of development work we felt enough was enough, so we thought we'd milk the franchise a little and put the VR missions in a sequel and hope everyone bought it. That, and we ran out of Lego which we were using to build the levels, we only had enough for 1 tanker and 1 oil platform. We've since done a deal with Mechano so shouldn't hit that problem again in future titles."
Is the a Metal Gear Solid film in the pipeline?
"I'm not really allowed to talk about that at this time. What I can say is that Bob Hoskins was asking WAY too much for the lead role, but my first choice for Raiden is already rehearsing his lines."
And who would that be?
"Julian Clary. I thought his 'Sticky Moments' series was wonderful, he's perfect for the part."
Are we talking Blockbuster Movie here or Straight to Video?
"There's a large budget for the movie. I see no reason why it shouldn't be a huge success. In fact, it could even do better than the game itself, considering that the film probably contains more gameplay than the original PS2 version. Plus a key factor is our original approach to film-making. We built the sets out of Lego you know."
Will you continue to be working exclusively for Konami?
"Possibly. It depends how much other companies offer. A man has to eat you know."
On a personal note, how did your name originate? 'Hideo' is quite a common first name in Japan, where does it come from?
"It's short for 'Hideous', I wasn't what you'd call a cute baby."
Any last words for your fans?
"Get a life."
Thank you.
