I been thinking, probably far too much, about the PS2 advert directed by David Lynch (king of such strangeness as Twin Peaks and Lost Highway). At first the Third Place meant nothing at all to me, then i considered that maybe reality was the first place, Imagination the second and the Third being the world created by PS2. Then i thought nah that's just too deep. I have now looked at the advert more closely and have surmised this:

The guys head floats off because you'll tear your head off trying to get your hands on a PS2

The Mummy is there because he put his pre-order in 3000 years ago and is still waiting for his damn letter from sony

and the guy with the head of a duck symbolises the sheer size of the finance bill (nasty pun there!) that you'll get if you ever get your hands on a PS2

Or maybe Sony have finally realised that this pre order system was rubbish and that they'll come in third place after Sega and Nintendo!

Thoughts anyone???

If there wasn't such a big demand of the console was the same as the PSX, N64 or DC there wouldn't be a shortage as there wouldn't be so many ppl wanting to buy them.

Maybe the third place is a warehouse in Birmingham where Sony are storing up this huge stockpile of PS2's cos they certainly ain't getting to the customers.

As far as im converned Sony now stands for:

System
Obtainable
Next
Year

Chill y'all

Tracer (on a misson to track down the missing PS2's and possibly a pair of Liz Hurley's pants!!))

On "The Money Program" on BBC2 a few weeks back about the battle between Sony and Microsoft, they showed David Lynch filming one of the PS2 ads.

The Sony guy said that "The third place" doesn't actually mean anything at all, it's just a tag line designed to appeal to the target audience (Generation X-Files), the ambiguity is supposed to keep us all talking about what it's supposed to be and thus help maintain the products profile.

What was really funny was the Sony man's look of complete confusion and helplessness at all this fliming of geese, fire and smoke. He was supposed to be there to oversee the filming and ended up sat on his thumbs taking a back seat to the director. Talk about "out of your depth". I think Lynch is on another planet myself (or medication).

Have to say , the first thing I thought of was. 'That's unfortunate choice of catchphrase'.

It does rather come accross as '3rd place (behind cube and eks-box ?)'

Oh well, I suppose someone , somewhere must think it is effective.....
