Bergkamp.

It really irritates me every time I see the words "Bergkamp will miss the match because of his fear of flying".

How much does this wetboy get paid?

Certainly he gets paid enough to make a little effort for his team.

Absolutely disgraceful.

It's not really like you need him that much anymore, anyway!

I've seen him on the Bench half-the-time this season, and yet with the likes of Henry, Ljungberg, Witlord, Pires, Kanu and co. ready to play in the attack, you can see why Wenger can afford to do this!

In a situation like this, any-other player would've probably requested to quit the club by now. But Bergkamp - whether he can fly or not - has shown he is commited and dedicated to your club by staying at the L'Highbury and rather than running-off to Italy or Spain, for example.

But surely there must be a way around his fears??
And all that driving wouldn't be good for him anyway!
What about hypnotising him or mind control or something?

His fear of flying is perfectly acceptable. He's been in two major incidents on aircraft, which have led him to this point - once with the Holland team, and once with Ajax. On one occasion, a journalist made a falsely reported a bomb threat, and on the other an engine cut out on the plane.

His fear isn't unfounded, and while I wish he would get over it, I can understand perfectly why he chooses not to fly.

As for 'making an effort for his team', I'm sure an extended drive is more of an effort than a flight. He's willing to drive, but the manager doesn't always let him.

He says himself: "I had just come to realise that flying was affecting me a lot and affecting my game. In the days leading up to the game I was worrying about the flight and then during the game I would be worrying about the flight back. That was no good for me or the team. To me there is no problem. In deciding not to fly again I've made a solution to a problem. I felt free again after I'd made that decision and I believe it's not a coincidence that I've played the best football of my career at Arsenal, since I made that decision."

The club and the fans are willing to accept it. At least he's got the guts to admit it, and I respect him for that.
