If this is true, and if the price is right (i.e. cheaper than a decent standalone blu-ray player) it may be worth a purchase by the time I can afford a HDTV...

Microsoft: Xbox 360 will not go Blu

In the interview, which took place at the Tokyo Game Show this week, Greenberg said: “We have no plans to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.”

...

“We also believe that the future's digital, and that's why we've invested in a massive library of entertainment content.”

The real test is if it will be upgradable. The main benefit of the PS3 drive is that it can keep up with the times as the firmware is fully upgradable. It's not so much of an issue at the moment with new drives, but the current standalone ones that have been out for more than 6 months may not be able to use some of the features on the Blu-ray discs.

I'm sure MS will have done their homework, mind you, and they'll produce something to rival the PS3 drive. Then it remains to be seen if Sony can come up with something to counter this.

For those of us who already have an Xbox it wont seem like spending that much though - it'll just be ike paying £100 for a Blu-Ray player...

However, I just found a Samsung Blu-Ray player on Amazon with mostly very good reviews for about £75 though.

Maybe not so great afterall...

hm. abut £99 here by the sound of it. So that makes the 360 and Blu-ray £200 minimum, but then you need a hard drive to make the most of Blu-ray (for the interactive features).

Still, unless Sony put their prices down it's still cheaper than the PS3.

Early days, though, and it may not be as good or compatible, we shall wait and see.
