Both Nintendo and Sony unveiled souped up versions of their handhelds recently. The DSi and the PSP3000 are new finely tuned versions of their older brothers, but are either of them worth the upgrade?

It’s true that if you don’t own either then there are advantages to owning one of these. The only disadvantages for the DSi is that games will be region locked and there is no GBA slot (so you’ll have to wait for another version of Guitar Hero before it will work). On the PSP front, the system is pretty much an improvement in all areas (unless you’re looking to hack it and install custom firmware, in which case you may have to wait a while for the hackers to catch up with the hardware and firmware).

Advantages of the PSP are:
- There is now a microphone, located between the volume controls and the PSP logo.
- Increased Colour Range and improved screen for anti-reflection
- Same updated features of the Slim and Lite model

Advantages of the Dsi are:
- SD Slot for saving games on the Wii Dsi Channel
- Possibly used for MP3 playback (not confirmed)
- Brighter and wider display than the Lite
- Built in Camera and software to take pictures
- Improved Wireless access, supposedly supporting more Wireless protocols

As you can see, the Dsi has the most improvements, but may also put some current owners off of upgrading. The most important update for current users is probably the enhanced wireless support, but this has been partially solved through USB dongles in the past.

So my conclusions are that neither console really warrants anyone swapping their current PSP Slim or DS Lite for the new model, but if you’re a first timer or have the old DS or PSP it’s worth waiting for these new models.
