I want to make basic pictures, but doing them in paint makes them huge.

I can turn them into smaller GIF's with paint, so what could I use, or what other image types would be much smaller, and what can I use to create them?

Cheers

PNG files are smaller than GIF files, and are still a lossless compression scheme. They are best for pictures with lower colour depth. If you're working with high colour depth images (eg photos), you'll most likely want to use JPG files instead.

Now, some programs which can convert between all these...

Obviously Photoshop, Paintshop pro and the rest of the big names will be great for editing images and converting between file types. You could use a trial version of one of those, or find some freeware program...

Try www.imagemagick.org
It's an excellent little free image editor, which will be able to do just about everything you'll need.

A GIF is about as small a file size as your going to get. Try typing "gif editor" or google or yahoo and see what comes up

If you are using XP Meka you can convert files into JPG in paint, I dont really fancy recommending someone to get Photoshop if they are just going to convert file types :)

...or KaZaA--- AHEM!

Well nah seriously, The Gimp is a watered down version of Photoshop in my oppinion, its no where near as powerful but runs along the same lines and will do more than you want it to.

I like the Gimp. Over Photoshop it does have a few advantages.
