I sure your all wondering how Tolkien could come up with such a well crafted idea for a fantasy trilogy of fantasy books, well I may have an answer. I have a feeling that Tolkien came upon during his search of ancient mythology the story of "The Ring of Gyges" it tells of a shepard of old that found a golden ring that allowed him to become invisible when he wisted it on his finger a in a certain direction.

If you wish to read the rest of tis story I have an internet source with it on:

Of course he didn't, but he had found out all of the names for old swords and items that most have forgotten. I never heard of a Gladius sword until I either read "Lord of the rings" or played Eternal Darkness.

He started drwaing up a basis of the whole mythology around 1919, based on his knowledge of Norse/Northern mystology etc.

I think.
