Plot
Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downy Jr are all big time actors that are part of the world’s most expensive war movie ever made. When the film starts to go wrong and shooting is far behind schedule, Les Grossman who is funding the film, starts to get frustrated with the director. Who is played by the always funny Steve Coogan, so drastic measures are taken to make the actors stop being drama queens and playing their role in the film.

They are all taken deep into the Vietnamese jungle, where hidden cameras and prop explosions have been rigged to create a war film that will go down in history. Soon on their arrival in the jungle, things go wrong and the pampered actors have no way back but to work their way through the tropical jungle. Ben Stiller, who directed and help write this film takes on the role of Tugg Speedman, an actor famous for doing action movies. Is convinced that even when things are going wrong, it is all part of the film and they should carry on. Speedman is seen as a lesser actor than the highly acclaimed Australian Kirk Lazarus, and is desperate to outdo him and win an Oscar for his role in this film. I need to take this space to applaud Robert Downy Jr for being yet another fantastic character and actor in this film. Helping with most the humour and making the movie as memorable as it is!

When Speedman is captured and held for ransom, the rest of the actors have to work together to help save him before he gets killed. While everyone back in American seems happy to let Speedman die to boost their cash flow and help sales. The group of acclaimed actors have to play the roles of their lives to help their comrade.

Cast
some of my favourite actors are in this film, and by seeing Tropic Thunder; it makes me like them all the more. They work so well together that it all flows naturally and the comedy doesn’t seem forced like in a lot of films. Before seeing the film I would have said that Robert Downy Jr is probably the least funny of the main cast, but as mentioned he really makes an impact on this film. Most of the funny quotes comes from him, while Jack Black relies more on body language and farting for his laughs the overall mix and blend of different comical styles, just mean that there is something for everyone.

Ben Stiller plays the usual character, being over the top in what he does, ageing and becoming less in the lime light for being great and more of being a fool, very much like in Zoolander. Everyone who likes Stiller, likes him in this role, and why change something you know is going to work. In this setting especially it is great and enables him to bounce of Downy Jr and Black to make a great performance from all three.

There are a few cameo’s thrown in for good measure and that add to the films excellence. Keep your eyes peeled for Tom Cruise as an overweight, rich bald man who likes to dance to Hip Hop. It sounds funny just thinking about it right! I really enjoyed that people were given a bit of a free role to play to their strengths, and more importantly it feels like people enjoyed making the film and had fun with it.

Filming and Special FX
Part of the film’s plot is that a pyro expert is an over the top man who enjoys explosions a little too much. I think this was probably true with the people making the film, as there are a lot of big explosions, and they all look great. While they are purposely made as being special effects in the film, the crew who filmed and set up for the shots have done a brilliant job. There must have been a big budget in this film, to have all the big name actors, some of the best explosions I have ever seen, and a tropical setting where they all reside.

The big tree line explosion that has been seen in a few trailers is one of the greatest but there are plenty more that will keep you on the edge of your seats and making you want more. A rather memorable part in the film for me was seeing a member of the filming crew explode by stepping on a landmine. The death and explosion looked as good as any action film, and the prop head that Speedman plays around with is great.

Overall
We all know Ben Stiller is funny, and Jack Black has a charm about him that everyone loves. But when these and others are put together to make a comedy, it really sets the bar high in my opinion. It is not just a mindless slapstick comedy where the comedy relies on people falling down stairs, or being hit with items. It actually allows people to be funny and relay quotes that will be used time and time again by people.

I don’t want to start writing quote after quote for my own amusement, but once you see the film I am sure you will know what I mean. I have to make a point that it seemed men enjoyed the film a lot more than women, but we have seen Ben Stiller enough times to know what the comedy is like and if you like films like Zoolander then you will really like this. I think it is one of the funniest films I have seen for a while and would happily watch time and time again!
