The Hori EX-2 Fighting stick is basically a replica of what you find on say a Streetfighter or Tekken coin op.It is very well constructed with extremely solid build quality.Don’t worry you wont hurt it in a hurry !.The Joystick feels very responsive with a solid clicking motion giving superb direction control. The buttons are fairly large yet easily accessible and again you don’t need to be gentle with them. There are six buttons set out in a different manner to the standard Xbox 360 controller. The red, blue and yellow buttons are in a line along the top, while the green,LT & RT are located directly below them.It is slightly strange at first (especially on games which you are used to playing on the standard controller) but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. There is also a port to connect your Xbox live headset for online gaming.
The stick is also compatible with many Xbox live arcade games.I found it added some nostalgia playing some of the old school shoot em ups but I would hardly recommend buying an EX-2 just to play those on.The real reason for this piece of kit is for playing fighting games. The arcade stick is available in Dead Or Alive 4,Virtua Fighter 5 and Soul Calibur IV versions. There is also a plain ‘vanilla’ version.I tested it on the three games mentioned as well as Streetfighter II : Hyper Fighting on Xbox live arcade.I found all of the above games much more playable using the stick and it did pretty much recreate the arcade experience of playing them.I found myself merciless punishing the stick while smashing the buttons as I attempted to pull off some killer combo’s.I was surprised just how much more depth it seemed to add to these games.
On the minus side these retail for around £50 and are not wireless. But is this not the age of the wireless controller ?,even Guitar Hero controllers are wire free these days.Sure it has a long lead (nearly 10ft) but even so this is disappointing for a relatively expensive piece of hardware. Also beat em ups are designed for you to play against your mates. This would mean buying two of these which would be very costly indeed.
Overall,if you love beat em ups it really is worth picking one up.With Streetfighter IV & Tekken 6 just around the corner you will get a lot of use out of this stick. If only it was wireless and a bit cheaper.
I’d give it 8.5/10 for fighting game fans (you’ll never use the rubbish D-pad ever again),but if you don’t play beat em ups it’s simply not worth the cost.
