What makes him so-much greater than the likes of Carlton Cole who's been banging-in the goals for Chelsea on an exceptionally-regular-basis at a slightly older 18?
Is it because of the age difference? Is it because Cole can fire-'em-in from 30 yards??
Surely Cole's the greater talent as he's managed to establish himself in the first-team of a top 5 club flooded with foreigners?? Could Rooney really do that?
And then there's John O'Shea, a young Irishman who's finally managed to make his pressence known to Sir Alex Ferguson and is now holding a regular place along the backline, putting the pressure on Ferdinand and Blanc with his ever-strong and succesfull challenges in the Champions' League and Premiership week-in, week-out.
He certainly deserves a lot more publicity than he's been getting! Especially now that his made his way into the Irish senior side, earning a cap-or-two along the way.
The point I'm trying to make here is that many football fans and supporters seem to think that this 'teenage mutant scouser' who can't even drive yet is going to be something big after only a handfull of games in-which he has managed to impress.
Now where have I seen something like that before....
Remember David Dunn? You may have seen him playing last-night in Blackburn's defeat against Celtic in the UEFA Cup. I thought he had a pretty-good game too, and he looked good with the ball at his feet.
He's only young, and wasn't it only last-season that we were all speculating him to make it to the big-time very-soon, and that he should be called-up to Eriksson's England squad immediatly?? And it all started with that cracking goal against Arsenal when he was just a "nobody", who scored a second goal a little later in that same game. And it was this same young midfield talent who went-on to score several times throughout the remainder of the 2001/02 Premiership campaign, and really help Blackburn to cause a few shocks and upsets while out-shining the other long-term prospects like Damien Duff and a player called Matt Jansen.
But even as we are, here today, he still remains to be nowhere near the England squad! And to add to his own personal dissapointment, we all seem to have forgotten about who he is after talking-about him so-much for that one goal, against Arsenal.
Surely the same can only happen to Rooney? Will he be remembered by anyone other-than Toffee fans come this time next-year?? I doubt it! Even if he does make it into the full England sqaud, miraculously! He's just not consistant enough to "do it" week-in, week-out. And-so he will be forgotten. Just like the rest.
And that is a list that even includes today's talents such-as West Ham's Joe Cole, and even Rio Ferdinand (a fomer-Hammer himself). The careers of both these 2 players seemed to start better than anyone-else could've ever imagined, yet they seem to have since-then gone downhill so-fast, so-soon. We may still know who they are but nobody's talking about them anymore like they used to. Well... OK, so people are still talking about Man United's record £30m signing.... But they're not good things being shared-around! And when was the last-time we ever read something about Joe Cole's great influence on a West Ham win? When was the last-time West Ham even WON a league match!!?? We know they've got the talent, but they just haven't been producing it on the pitch as they've matured more and grown-older.
Rooney may look "on-form" now but will he still be the same come May next year after playing for Everton on a regular-basis? I think it's highly-doutbfull after looking at previous examples of good youngsters gone... not-so-good.
I don't know why this seems to happen to so-many of them. Especially when you see a player of Joe Cole's abillity who can do things with a football that you would've never thought were actually possible to do! And it's even happened to the "prolific goal-scorer" Michael Owen with his 'lack of goals' during the early-stages of this campaign. Maybe it's because they grow-up and learn more about the game, starting to take it more seriously and realisisng it really is a lot harder than it looks, and that a training session with the first-team is really nothing like an away fixture at Old Trafford, Highbury, or the Nou Camp.
Francis Jeffers is a classic example of a player who has gone-on to bigger-things after emerging as a youngster with a real eye for goal in his early days with Everton as a teenager. But since he signed for the French-loving Highbury he's barely started a game for the Gunners! And it can't be just because he's not French! He's obviously not doing it on the training ground, not looking like the player he was at Goodison Park. And therefore he falls behind in the pecking-order - so-far back that even Jerome Alliadiare (some French kiddy) is getting more of a look-in than the scouser nicknamed: "The FA Cup" for his facial appearence. And even this unknown Frenchman has come-in and scored, impressing his manager, unlike Jeffers.
He only seems to get a game now when Henry's injured, Wiltord's suspended and Kanu's away with Nigeria in an a European away tie that Bergkamp cannot get to!
And even then he's still struggling to fend-off the likes of Kolo Toure and Freddie Ljungberg who can quite easily be played out-of-position.
If wants his place in the squad of this big-team then he's really gunna have to work for it! I be that if Rooney or any-other young talent moves-on to a bigger-club too-soon they'll find it just as hard to fit-in, even with the growing-reputation they are likely to have. It's a different ball-game altogether!
So then... While we may be getting all worked-up and excited over players like Wayne Rooney and the rest as they break-through from the reserves and into first-team football, just try and remember that you won't remember them in another 12 months time as they'll be replaced by some-other young kiddy who'll pop-up out of nowhere - where the current young stars will return to rest in peace.
They may look big now, but they'll just be other average players come this-time nexr season.
Trust me. Look at the evidence!
There's no real need to hype these youngsters up so-much when they're more than likely to fail at what you hope and expect them to achieve.
Let's go back to talking about Roberton Carlos and his free-kicks, or Zidane and his beautifull ball-control....
:-D

Yep, he was something un-special really. But he has played for France a few times! He also played well in the French First Division too, but when he arrived at Anfield he just didn't fit-in with both Berger and Camara fighting for that place on the left-wing already.
I remember he scored this brilliant bycicle kick for them once, possibly the only goal he ever scored for the reds! But it was dis-allowed for offside.
I think they sold him for less than a million? I'm not sure though...
