Guy Ritchie is back in gangster form and ready to bring a good old London mob movie to our screens. To which I am very thankful. I have been a big fan of Guy Ritchie since Lock Stock, with Snatch being my favourite of his films and quotes that you still hear down the pub. A few years back Revolver was anticipated by many and we were all hoping for another big hit. While it was off the rails and un-conventional. It failed to live up to its brothers. So how does 2008’s latest in big name films compare?

Pretty well actually, to put the plot into a short and sweet few sentences to keep it simple. A Russian who has come over to England, wants to build some big properties, but needs the help of a big time London gangster who pretty much owns the city. The Russian’s accountant informs a local gang of thugs about 7 million Euros being transported to get Planning permission and various other things. So like most thugs, they go and steal it. Leaving an angry Russian and people who need paying. Throw into the mix the Russian’s lucky painting getting stolen by a “dead” music star, and you have yourself the usual fast paced, quick cut Guy Ritchie film.

Location for the film is spot on, being in the less pretty places of London and times, but also in the more expensive venues when the money is about. I found some bits take a little while to sink in what has happened and that Guy Ritchie is trying to be too clever at some points. We all know that the twists and outcomes of Snatch are what made the film, along with some great one liners. Rock n Rolla has got some punchy lines that had the cinema laughing, and when it is all said and done, the plot twist is a pretty good one and one I did not see coming.

The usual fast paced, adrenaline music is used on the chase scenes and when things start to go bad. Gerard Butler (300) has a big part to play in the film’s success; he is funny to watch and plays a realistic London thug. He is at the core of most the jokes in the film and his importance is key throughout. While it is unusual t see a film in this genre with no Jason Statham, but to be honest it is nice not having his same style in every film acting in here.

While the entire main plot is running along well, in the background we see Johnny Quid, who has been reported as dead by falling off a boat. Now the young Rock Star is far from dead, but has been hiding out with his friend doing all kinds of drugs. At first you think he is the run of the mill junkie with nothing to add. But Mr. Quid adds some youthful arrogance and a couple of good twists into the story. Being the one with the Russian’s painting in his possession. A lot of people are looking for someone who is dead.

With all films like this most characters introduced become integral to the films plot at some point, and even the appearance of Ludacris to the London Gang scene is a welcome change to the usual casting choice of Guy Ritchie. Playing the manager of Johnny Quid he is seen a couple of time towards the end and actually does a good job of acting, and does not just play Ludacris.

While some people will love the film, I think most people will like it. There will be a sequel without fail as the last shot of the whole film points directly at it. I don’t think it is as good as the previous films like Snatch and Lock Stock. But it is a refreshing change of cats making a good film that people will enjoy. At the end of the day if people enjoy it and feel they had their money’s worth then job done. A Guy Ritchie got the job done! Not an essential Cinema watch as the ability to go back and watch a few things again may open up new areas missed a first time.

If you like Guy Ritchie or this genre of Film, then be sure to not let this one slip through the net at any point as it is a good, solid film. Some famous names thrown into the equation make the acting quality that much higher and the story flow well. All in all, watch the film!
