Manchester United are certain to renew rivalries with Deportivo La Coruna after UEFA confirmed their seedings for tomorrow's Champions League second phase draw.

Premiership title holders Arsenal also know they will have to tackle Italian outfit Roma, while Bobby Robson's Newcastle, fresh from their last-gasp victory over Feyenoord last night, can prepare themselves for a trip to Milan after learning they will be paired with either AC or Inter, in addition to a top side from Spain.

With four teams from Spain and Italy advancing to the last 16, one club from each country must be placed in each second phase group.

Because United, winners in 1999, have been placed in a pot with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and therefore cannot be drawn against those teams, Deportivo, runners-up to AC Milan in Group G, have to provide the opposition.

The pair met four times in last year's competition, with Deportivo coming out on top twice in the opening group phase, only for Sir Alex Ferguson's side to gain revenge by dumping out the Spaniards at the quarter-final stage

Conversely, Arsenal must face Roma because they have been placed in the same pot as AC Milan, Inter and Juventus, one of whom will definitely face United, while the Gunners will take on a Spanish group winner.

Newcastle have been placed in Pot Four and because clubs from the same country cannot meet each other at this stage of the competition, both Arsenal and United must face one of Lokomotiv Moscow, Ajax and FC Basle, who have already eliminated Liverpool and Celtic from the competition so far this season.

The Magpies cannot take on Group E rivals Juventus again and because the Italian side are in the same pot as Arsenal, it only leaves AC Milan and city rivals Inter as possible Italian opponents.

Seeding Pot One: Real Madrid (UEFA co-efficient 147.233), Manchester United (125.729), Barcelona (116.233), Valencia (106.233).

Pot Two: Juventus (91.334), Arsenal (90.729), Inter (88.334), AC Milan (69.334).

Pot Three: Deportivo (82.233), Bayer Leverkusen (81.495), AS Roma (77.334), Borussia Dortmund (73.495).

Pot Four: Lokomotiv Moscow (57.645), Ajax (48.082), Newcastle (43.729), FC Basle (14.312).

Man United
Deportivo
Inter Milan OR Juventus
FC Basle OR Ajax OR Locomotiv Moscow

Man United are going to be struggling in that group and I think they will have to have no injuries to get through this.

Arsenal
Roma
Barcelona OR Valencia
FC Basle OR Ajax OR Locomotiv Moscow

This won't be as easy as it looks, but I'm sure that Arsenal will qualify.

Newcastle
Valencia OR Real Madrid OR Barcelona
Inter Milan OR AC Milan
Borussia Dortmund or Leverkusen

I feel sorry for Newcastle, as they have the toughest group of them all. I don't think they will qualify unless they can win some matches and hope that the other teams keep drawing to each other.

Hmm, 4 spanish teams, 4 italian teams, 3 english teams (and it could have been 4 again).

3 countries really do dominate european football.

Avoiding Real, Barca and Valencia at this stage is, obviously, a boon.

I would really like to see all 3 english teams make it through to the knockout stage, but I suspect Newcastle may struggle, whatever group they end up in. Unless the play like they did last night, in which case they could make a serious bid.

Doesnt really matter who plays who at this stage in the competition, theoretically one would like to avoid the likes of Valencia and Juve untill later on in the round - but thats not how it works.
