Just installed Linux again (hurrah! down with Gates! etc etc) and am very impressed with the funky new tune that KDE3 plays. However:

The internet looks like someone hit it with an ugly stick, making it all very hard to read. Yes, even this site. I'm guessing the problem is with the fonts I have on my system, but changing the 'font' options in Mozilla, Konqueror et al just reveals different levels of ugliness, instead of making the web all gorgeous again. At the moment I'm using Helvetica, which is functional but still quite crap. So I have some questions:

(a) am I right so far?

(b) what is the least worst standard font I can use?

(c) what is the best font I can use?

(d) where can I get it, and where do I put it once I've got it?

You're wasting your time, oo.o has its own rendering engine that is separate to XFree86. Last tiome I checked there was no plan to enable XFT or any other form of anti-aliasing on it.

Cool. I am now enlightened. I've managed to de-uglify everything except OpenOffice, which has so far resisted all my efforts. I'll have a proper go at it later, and maybe have another search around their website for some advice.

I would have done this sooner, but I made the mistake of installing nethack. I used to have this for Windows but had to remove it for the sake of my sanity:

"This is a stupid game. I hate RPGs"

Six hours later.

"This is a stupid game. I hate RPGs"

And so on, ad infinitum.

I don't know much about fonts, obviously :) What else does it need to do? Grab the fonts from Bill, convert them(?), then register them with the font server? It's not something that keeps me awake at night, but *still* I must be told.

I installed Evolution, which I didn't have before, and is very excellent. Also enjoying KDevelop, but I will also give Anjuta a go to see which I prefer.

KDE is for n00bs, it's good for a while but you quickly realise that the only decent stuff is written in GTK. You tire of KDE quicker than Windows, despite the fact that it is *very* pretty.

To answer my own question: corefonts.sourceforge.net

What a very cool piece of software. Could I have just copied all the fonts from my Windows partition? Probably, but that wouldn't have been nearly so cool. Suddenly, all is right with the world.
