Look at the team in-action this season and you'll see a real difference when compared-with the team of a decade ago when the Premiership had only just-begun, a time when United were to go-on and nick the first Premiership Title, and then go-on to obtain many others during the forthcoming years under Alex Ferguson's reign.
But after a 3-1 defeat against City rivals and a league positioning of only 5th place, things are so-much different now that to what they have been as we've followed the Red Devils during the 1990's.
Whether you are actually from Manchester or not, United fans are still today known as the "Glory Hunters" of the English game, for obvious reasons after a deacde-or-so of almost continuous success. Makes sense really, especially when you look and how many Londoners and other Brits have chosen United over Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and the rest.
But things are different now, yet we are still known-as "Glory Hunters" due to our club's significant track record under Ferguson alone.
Should we still be called "Glory Hunters"?? It doesn't really make sense when you see that we haven't even won the league title for well-over a year now.
Should the 'rules' be changed? Maybe Arsenal fans should be the new team that everyone supports?? I don't know about you, but I know a hell-of-a-lot of Arsenal fans in my local area, just-as-many-as the United fans I know, and I live nowhere near London, let-alone Manchester!
But all that is irrelevant to me. I believe that United fans like myself will always be known-as "Glory Hunters" no matter where we come from. Unless another club can match or even BEAT our outstanding record that has made us who we are.
Things are a lot different for us know, in the the era after "Kung-Fu" Cantona, after "Sparky" Hughes, and after the "Great Dane" Schmeichel. While we may have David Beckham, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and van Nistelrooy to try and make up for those severe losses things just aren't the same, even with Sir Alex in-charge.
Instead of winning almost winning every game and scoring goal-after-goal in the league alone, we are the ones getting the severe beatings, while the teams we have shoved-aside year-after-year are finally getting the chance to put one-or-two over us in all major competitions where we hurt most after defeat. The expectations may have been very high at the start of the season following last-season's disasters and some satisfying moves in the Transfer Maret, but it is already starting to look like the 2001/02 campaign being played all-over-again, only WORSE!
The new season's FA Cup campaign may yet to have begun yet for us this season, but the "Worthless" Worthington Cup is already under-way, and things are going better for us than like what we were expecting! Instead of fielding a full team of 19 year olds I doubt even Fergie's heard of we had a few big-names in there, and came-away with a WIN - and not another early 3rd Round defeat in the hands of some Lower Division team! But what are we all getting so-excited about? After all, the League Cup is pretty "worthless" and meaningless anyway.... But it might be all we have come May 2003...!
But in Europe this season you can see all the players have really been putting in the effort away from the training ground with out early qualification. And even Diego Forlan's started scoring now! But all good things come to an end sometime - just like Arsenal's unbeaten run ( ;D ). After a miserabley-poor performance nearly 2 weeks ago against some below-par Israeli team, can we really be expected to go all-the-way this season like so-many-people have already been anticipating??
So that's how it stands this season - on the playing side of things anyway. The financial side hasn't been too-great after seeing Rio Ferdinand's arrival soak-up the transfer kitty and so-many potential buys being pushed-aside in favour of a SECOND back-up for Barthez in Ricardo, the unknown nobody.
Compare that with our '98/'99 Treble Season or maybe one of The Double campaigns of only a few years ago, and we just look like another average team!
No, it's true! Mancester United appear to have become another average team with a lot of hope and expectation but ends-up with nothing at the end of the season - just like Chelsea have been for so-many years after declaring they WILL be challenging for the title each-and-every year. And we all know they get nothing!
How can a team with so-many World and International stars from around Europe, and South America too, have falled-down to the level of a team of Chelsea's calibur??
Talk about a disaster!!
So, supporting Manchester United at this current date, if you've been following their movements for the last decade-or-so, has a very different feel to it indeed.
No longer are we watching a team with flair, elegance, and style, but a team of under-30's who have been-around at the club for too-long and seen their best years of football fade-away right infront of our very eyes.
Should locla fans really be paying so-much for a season ticket at Old Trafford?
Have United's consistant days of success really gone up the Arsenal??
Will you be happy, as a United fan, to be watching another average side with low expectations from now-on??
It seems that with the new Millennium has come a very new and different Manchester United side compared-to what we have grown to know.
Only then. ;-)
