I imagine its more complicated than just wanting a share of the browser market though. I suspect theres alot of truth to theory that they want to be able to drive browser development in directions that benefits their virtual desktop/online OS ideas.
The sad part is, the web needs it. True advancements on the web happen at a snails pace currently and I doubt that'll change without some company aggressively pushing their own agenda.
If I ever decide to start a company intent on world domination, I'm definitely having "Do No Evil" as my motto to avoid attracting any major criticism. Well it works for Google. :)
