Excuse me, but somebody needs a serious reality check here, and his name is Mr Sabri. Thwarted ? It's set it in motion, and has he not noticed B2 deployment to the UK and Diego Garcia, the prepositioning ships in the Gulf, the carrier groups being readied, NATO Exercises in the surounding areas e.t.c
It's good in a way, but even if there was a conflict as a result of a breach of this resolution some people would still say it wasn't justified anyway....on the other hand this does give Iraq a chance for peace if it complies, which I'd be surprised if it did, though not disappointed.
Done right, this resolution could avert a messy war that we don't really need unless Saddan will not comply to the UN demands. If he does then the focus can go back to containment, and keeping Saddam in check. Not much good for the Iraqi people - although if Saddam does disarm and reveal his WMDS then there is no reason why the UN sanctions couldn't be lifted and a more long term plan put in place for removing Saddam.
If Saddam is disarmed this way, then the best way of removing him is to lift the sanctions as that will increase prosperity and ease suffering and poverty, and weaken his position overall. But the sanctions should not be lifted if Iraq does not comply.
Iraq is not being asked to do anything extraordinary, it is simply being given a final chance to comply with the resolution passed in 1991, and that it has ignored for 11 years.
Saddam has a chance for peace - disarm and fully reveal the weapons he has and he can avert a conflict. Fail, and face the consequences. America and the UK will not go to war if he reveals his weapons as there'd be no support anywhere else. If Iraq does not reveal them, and it is clear it has them, then the support of other countries will be so much easier to gain.
Saddam has been tossed a rope; a lifeline, or a noose. His choice.
