The whole setting for CONTROL and the environment in which they all work is a very typical cliché for secret organisations. The large security doors, a lot of gadgets and all the field agents are seen as much “cooler” than the office Intel workers. Max being the best at his job but longing to get some real action in the field has his hopes shattered when the Director of CONTROL explains he is too good to leave the office. With his dreams gone, he returns to work the next day to carry on with what he is best at, only to find CONTROL has been invaded and everything is a mess. It would appear that a double agent has betrayed CONTROL and allowed the enemy access to their HQ.
Max, who acts quickly, finds himself with Agent 99, trying to defend CONTROL HQ, but in line with the comedy adventure style of the film, he ends up hurting his own team. This sets the way for the rest of the film; all the CONTROL agents are being killed off or targeted by a group called CHAOS, who is gathering nuclear weapons to hold the USA at ransom. Max is elected to work with Agent 99 (who has had plastic surgery to change her appearance) on bring down CHAOS and bring peace to the World.
While the plot seems serious, the adventure they undertake is at times far from it. Travelling between Moscow and Los Angeles we see Max and Agent 99 grow closer, and Max’s feelings for her become apparent from very earlier.
The comedy comes from Carell playing an agent who’s test scores max him seem an incredible field agent, but lack of experience and being naïve means things tend to go wrong. From swinging into walls and getting shot in the neck with a mini crossbow. It is a kind of slapstick comedy with the occasional joke being put in. There is the occasional sexual reference due to Max’s feelings for Agent 99, which is suited more for the adults watching the show. The good news is that the film is funny, and the plot works well. Do not expect a hardcore spy film here, but if it is a light hearted adventure that you are looking for. You will be pretty happy with this film. The mix of nerdy character Max, to the sexy Agent 99 and the brute Agent 23, played very well by Dwayne Johnson who is all too familiar with the macho man role in a film.
It is a good mix that comes together well and seemed to please the entire audience that was watching it. It is without a doubt a family film with adult jokes included. It is not as full on as some of Carell’s other films, but it is not intended to. Just see it as a tame film for him in which is plays a character that suits him well. That seems to be the best way to put it.
I personally enjoyed the film from start to end, and found that it flowed extremely well, while there are plot holes and times when you find yourself thinking; “that would never happen.” You just need to remind you8rself that it is not a serious film. If you go along with this attitude I am sure most people will find it an enjoyable few hours at the cinema.
