Vantage Point

After seeing a trailer for Vantage Point I was quite intrigued as to how the movie would come together in a way that was enjoyable to watch. The movie is told from several different people’s perspectives, showing their first hand view of the horrific events that unfold. It’s a popular subject to tackle within the film industry as we know how real the threat of terror is in our present world. So can this new blockbuster hit shine from what is becoming a crowded subject area?

The movie is based at a planned terror summit in Spain, to affectively put a stop to terror that is continuing to darken the world that we live in. President Ashton of the United States of America is attending to make a public speech on his and Americas plan of action. Suspense begins to build quite quickly and you’re pretty much guessing that he will be killed very quickly into the movie, although always doubtful as surely that would be the story finished, right? Presumption is proved correct and within the first half an hour of the movie he is assassinated. After this point in the story I struggled to see how the plot would thicken as it is usually a point in this type of movie that is left until the end, after a lengthy build up of suspense. Keeping an open mind is vital with this movie due to its irregular structure.

Being a jigsaw type of movie we get to learn about each character in turn, and at first seems a little strange and possibly annoying, it soon comes together quite neatly. Each person has a story to tell, their view of what happened in the lead up to the assassination of the President. A policeman, a secret service agent and a tourist are amongst the people we learn from in their 15 minute allocated slot. Hearing affectively the same story 8 times over in 15 minute intervals sounds repetitive and even verging on being slightly tedious. However it kind of works, each part of the puzzle fits in without confusion and allows the story to run smoothly without too much to ponder on.

There is quite a twist within this muddled story line that I hadn’t spotted straight away. Looking back now, without it the movie would have felt a bit dry, like a doughnut without the jam. There’s an epic car chase which is debateable in respect to how long it actually needs to be to get the desired effect, it seems to drag a little bit. It’s not much of a thought provoking movie although it does give your brain enough food to get stuck into.

Vantage point is never going to be able to contest with the likes of the Bourne series that dominant this area of the industry. In saying that it does show a different way to portray a much used story line, adding a bit of spice into an almost exhausted area of film. It’s worth watching if you like the action genre as it’s the probably one of a few decent action movies we will see this year.

A step outside the box 7/10
