Over the past few years we have seen some new additions to the much loved old films, The new Rocky Film, Rambo, the aliens and predator films had some films to join the series. Surely we can only add to great films for so long before they become stale and boring. Seeing the same characters do the same things. It is always the case of anything in media to make sure it does not outlive it's welcome.
Movies & Television shows can go on for too long and become hated or see their fans drop off to something new. Various methods are tried to bring life into old programmes or films. Only the very best can pull it off and some even ruin their good name trying. The Simpsons did it well with the Movie, there are talks of a Friends Film which will be much welcomes by the millions of fans that it built up over the ten seasons it ran for.
Some sequels for films just flop and are forgotten about very quickly. Things like Grease 2 - it never even came close to the originals glory. Production companies often think they can survive for two or three films on the name that was built by the original.
The main point of this topic is to see what people's views and opinions are on the various sequels and methods used to bring big names back into the public's eye. I think we will begin to see more and more remakes or films that get a makeover with new CGI. Star Wars did it in the 90's and it was a big hit, re-released in cinemas and taking million for Mr. Lucas.
This topic was sparked in my mind by watching Jumanji. In my opinion, a great idea for a film, a good film, and one which i enjoyed watching again this Bank Holiday Monday. But it looks so dated and old that it lacked that essence and presence that new films have. I think i would pay to see some of the old films i love made again and given a bit of life from technology we have now. Even the quality of the picture.
It is always refreshing to see new ideas and plots hit our screen, but i do not think it hurts to see some of the old ones we all love made again. Younger people especially may be reluctant to watch some older films which are great films that our generation or previous generations have enjoyed.
The problem that may arise is that the people who have seen the originals and the great actors and actress's that made these films great, may not like seeing other people try play them roles. The new Italian Job was not looked on with as much respect as the original. But i think if it is done right and casted well that we could see some old films which even some of us may have missed could become big hitters in the years to come. Some films may need making a bit more modern but the plot ideas and the messages within the films could remain strong and thats what helps make the films so great.
Well that was just something i was thinking over, if other people would like to see more sequels, or some remakes of old films that they have seen and loved, or maybe not seen.
Thanks for reading.
Like i said i am not against either method if it is done right. It happens in games aswell. I do not mind paying money for a revamped game if i think the effort has been put in and is worth it.
A sequel can sometimes be what fans are waiting for, think about The Dark Knight, once Batman Begins ended all i wanted was the next one. I really hope / can't wait for the next installment of Iron Man on the big screen.
That said, we've had a similar thing before with Westerns like The Magnificent Seven and Fist Full of Dollars. But it's not very often a remake betters the original and most of the the time the ones that do work are those that are re-imagined.
Sequels are a different kettle of fish. A good sequel can enhance a franchise or improve the back-history. Aliens, Terminator 2 and Godfather 2 are just two of those that worked. Of course, if films are planned from the start to be trilogies then I guess it doesn't count (do we count Empire Strikes Back and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers as true sequels or just the second part of a trilogy?), a bad sequel can kill a franchise (Indiana Jones perhaps?) if it's really bad. Usually it just involves a change of direction (or director in the case of Joel Schummacher on Batman) to get it wrong or revive a franchise again.
