Hyper Text Markup Language is what we can use to code webpages. It is by far the best coding language to learn first and once you've got the hang of it, doors to other languages will open quickly.

* HTML files are simply text files with a .html or .htm file extension.
* Web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox read the Markup Tags inside these files and this displays a webpage.
* HTML tags all have a similar format and the tags are surrounded by angle brackets: < >

The fantastic thing about HTML is that you don't need any complicated software; in fact, you can just use a plain text editor such as Notepad. There are many HTML editors around but these can cost money, and without learning the basics first they will be of limited use.

* Having a good knowledge of HTML will make professional design software easier to use.

Because webpages read HTML from text files with ".html" and ".htm" extensions this means we can view the source of other webpages.
We can view the original text file that was used by the designer to make the webpage.

* In Firefox, click View then Page Source.
* In Internet Explorer, click View then Source.

Why not - Look at the source code of sites that interest you and try using similar code.

Learning HTML is essential for the world of webdesign. Even just a basic knowledge of some tags and codes can help you understand how websites function, and gives you an insight into the stunning world that is the Internet.
