There's an amazing amount of detail I've began to see in humanity that I didn't realise was there before.

We are pathetic. We are simple. Everything we do all leads back to the same one or two things. Mostly power or comfort, and that in turn leads back to sex anyway.

The instinct to be "different". Something that can make you "shine" above the rest. Real people, the real, fantastic people in this life, will not be judged by the amount of makeup they wear, but by the strength of their soul, and the depth of their love.

People who smoke to stand out. Anything at all to comfort them, to make them believe that they're different to anybody else on this planet.

The power of being part of an elite. A group, a secret society. It's childish stuff. It's all just about comfort. Comfort from the fact that you will never make a difference to this planet, because you're no more than normal.

There is NO power. No matter how many people you kill, no matter how many lives you can destroy, you will never be powerful. You will be no more than another human being on this planet.

Suicide bombers, mass murderers, football players, members of parliment, doctors, pilots, scientists, artists. Every last one of them only function because they believe they make a difference to the world. It's just about power. It's just about comfort.

We write on this forum, I write this now, because for some strange reason I believe I can make a difference, I believe I have power. I used to believe I had power because I could confuse people, write things they couldn't understand, talk in languages that baffled people. Stand out. But no, that is not power, that is comfort. Smoking is a comfort, fashion, make up, it's all the same. I see no more difference from a man with a fag in his mouth from a woman wearing eyeliner.

People make money from comforting people. Cigarette companies, perfume companies, fashion companies, prostitutes. Anything to cast aside everyone else, and make that person powerful. They suck the life out of this world. They encourage us to fight, to try and become powerful. It's wrong. Cigarette's aren't just addictive because of the chemicals. They're addictive because people believe they are powerful to smoke. People believe they are powerful to drink, take drugs, etc. Everything we do on this planet, we do either to comfort ourselves, or to make us feel powerful. Helping people makes us feel powerful, hurting people can make us feel powerful.

Do you know what the REAL power in this world is? Giving up those comforts, and making your own power. Not caring what people think of you. Not caring what people will ever know of you, not caring if people will love what you do or hate what you do or be shocked by what you do but just do it.

The first thing we learn is that we are affected by what people think of us. Our parents aren't teaching us not to throw our food on the floor, they're teaching us that people judge you by what you do.

And we're taught that a lot.

We're taught for so long to live in fear of what people think of us. We're taught to hide away any feeling we may have. I stopped talking because people wouldn't listen, I started writing because they read.

And in the end, the only real comfort comes from entertainment. The only real power comes from affecting someone emotionally, and the only real way of doing that is to just be yourself.

There's no power in how you look, you are not important because you wear baggy clothes. You are not changing this world by looking different. Your statements are nothing more than common words.

You want to make a statement? Make me laugh, make me smile. Make me cry.

Because we as humans have no power against power. We will always try and become powerful, no matter what we do. We won't escape from it. We just need to head ourselves in the right direction.

What if the famous dictators of this world decided to make people laugh instead of kill people for power? What if suicide bombers realised that playing the guitar served a much better purpose for changing the world?

Maybe some of us are born more power hungry than others, and that's why we achieve so much.

And you know, maybe we are all different after all.

Rise to power
Build a vast tower
Then make 'em cower
With a flashy bomb shower
Then milk their honey
In other words money
It's really quite funny

He-Man had the power.

The power of Grayskull.

"I have the power" he used to say.

But maybe he was just saying it? Maybe he didn't really have the 'power of Grayskull', but creating this mythology around himself, elevating himself to a standard higher than that of an average man, gave him the advantage when faced with adversity.

I mean, if you're a henchman for the evil lord Skelator, you could no doubt carry out his bidding, and deal with the every day people that opposed it. But when faced with this man, that may not actually be more powerful than anyone else, the believe that he is something special would give him the advantage. Stopping to think "Christ it's that powerful He-Man" would give him the chance to strike first, then go home an moralise with Orko.

I'm sure there's a decent analogy in there some where. ;o)

People do have power, and people do make a difference. Thinking otherwise is quite negative.

Think of all those who died storming the beaches on D Day. They died, but made a difference to the world because their sacrifice led to the liberation of Europe.

When the 9/11 hijackers crashed those planes, they changed the world.

Every person, in some small way, makes up this world. There is no more power in being different than there is in being like many. It's superficial because we all actually think different things, but we don't always say them.

Comfort doesn't just come from entertainment, it's other people, and not always those closest to you. When it really matters people have a great capacity to comfort each other.

Most people don't actually care what those around them look like or say, at times it may seems like everyone is scrutinising you but they probably aren't. If you have something to say then say it, and forget what others think. Anyone that matters will respect you for doing so, and those who don't aren't worth considering.

Lastly, people do have power against power. History proves that. During the centuries countless dictators, regimes, governments e.t.c have all found that out to their cost. One example, Tianneman Square. 1 Man stands in front of a tank, and makes history.

In many cases though, power over power is an illusion, created by the willingness of one side not to do everything it could do. It's like when extremists hold rallies supporting terrorism in this country. Their power only comes from the fact that the state restrains itself in suppressing them. In Iraq, a similar kind of protest, say for democracy, would be brutally put down.

Hmm...rambled on a bit there !

My thoughts:

A lot of what drives people is the hunger to be special.
Competition, trying to be best, trying to achieve something important.
Maybe it has some other benefits if you ever get there, but a heck of a lot of it seems to be down to the search to be special, above the next guy. Bigger than the other ant on the farm.

And in the grand scheme of things, in the whole of the world, one person doesn't have much influence. Across all space and time any one of us is an even smaller and more forgettable blip.
Compared to the introspective spheres we tend to live our lives in, it's a pretty unsettling thought.

So we seek to be 'better' than everyone else. Like Grix said, a comfort.
Or maybe we look for power - in itself a way to be significant, and a comfort against a universe where we're pretty meaningless.

And you know what? That search to be special, that's just one of the things that makes everybody the same.

But if you turn your back on it, don't forget to ask yourself if you're doing so to be special.

See when it comes down to it, whatever unltimately motivates our actions, our underlying personalities, whether you think it's genetic, environmental, or something spiritual or soulful, i don't know, but i expect it's never going to be much more noble or valuable than seeking comfort or being special.
And these underlying principles, they're behind EVERYTHING you do. That's by definition, it's what they are.

Maybe i'm wrong. Right now i even kind of hope i am. But i think that's about it. People are built on lame foundations, and (or thus?) everything they do is in pursuit of lame goals.

Me? I'm going to just try to build on these foundations to stay happy and get by. Not always making such a great job of it, but if you can think of anything better, let me know.

But if it's any consolation, in your own introspective sphere, you're special, you're the man, you're king.
If you want to find your special..ness, maybe it's there?

The ability to destroy entire planets is insignificant when compared to the power of the Darkside.

Us humans are always trying to claim that we have powers that are not easily explained or proveable. Uri Geller is an obvious example. People believe his clap trap because they like to think that human's do have the potential to be more than an "organic sex machine that eats and sleeps". (Apart from being gullible that is). We don't have any "powers", what we are is evolved monkeys, there is nothing special about us.

So people decide that power comes from being able to influence others. To make decisions about other peoples lives, to have direct control over them could be perceived as powerfull. After all we are all doomed to return to the void at some point.
