Will we ever stop thinking about Nirvana in this way? Will we ever tire of hearing Cobain's voice while seeing him jump-around on stage like a lunatic in Nirvana's videos? They may not have been the smartest of guys at the time, but they sure did make one hell-of-a difference to the future of music.
What I am wondering now is what life will be like in another 10 years time.
Will Nirvana's fan-base have stretched even-further amongst the growing population of th world? Will we finally know the answers to the questions still floating-around Cobain's apparent "Suicide" death? More importantly..., will there ever be another Nirvana? Another band that'll just come-in from nowhere and change everything all-over-again?
For any new band to just come-in and BE the next 'Nirvana' must be considered as very-near-to-impossible. Especially if they TRY to have the same effect on the music world and people as they did. To me, it seemed like it all came pretty naturally to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, without them having to really try and think that hard about what they were going to play or work-on next. The next band to have an effect as-great-as Nirvana's - if there ever will be one - would have to work like that, and just basically use the first things that come-off the top of their heads. Even if it isn't 'popular'. But we could be having quite same wait for that band. We may even spend the rest of our lives waiting, and still have nothing!
So what about the bands around in music today?
Who could we be looking-back on in 10 years time like we are today with Nirvana?
If you're looking for a band in the music world today then you've gotta look at System of a Down and Tenacious D as a start.
S.o.a.D. have been-around for roughly 4 years now, and have only released 2 albums within that space of time. That only goes to show you that they've taken the time and put-in the effort to make these 2 CD's as original and outstainding from the rest as they are. While they're working in this way, just about every other band has already released 2 or 3 new 10-track albums while Serj Tankian and co. are still on that first one they started almost a year ago. They give us something different, with that feel of complete "randomness" in their songs, jumping from metal, to punk, and then onto a ballad, all in a matter seconds, 'mixing it around'. A real eccentric live band that just seems to love and really care about what they're doing, while never taking it for granted.
They've certainly brought something original into music. I just wonder how long it'll last?
And then there's Tenacious D - fuelled by the drumming of fomer Nirvana-man Dave Grohl along with 2 of the world's funniest brothers who gel-together better than the Mario Brothers on your kitchen sink throughout the whole of their debut album.
They may be very-well-known throught American for their TV appearences, and they may have had a little help from a few other people too (icluding the Dust Brothers), but I reckon we could all still be laughing-out-loud at tracks like "Inward Singing" and "Lee" in 10 years time, while enjoying the real music of this differently-hilarious band like "Tribute" and "Explosivo" for example.
The only fear I have for them is that these 2 brothers may get sucked-in and spat-back-out again by the colour-co-ordinated pop fans out there who seem to destroy the flavour of so-many bands and so-much talent. But they've worked hard and come from nowhere, and they've made me laugh too. I'm sure we'll still remember Jack Black and Kyle Glass in 2012.
These bands may not have had a great effect on music as-of-yet, but they've only really begun to play their guitars. Within time, possibly during the next few years, i'm almost certain that we'll see some new boys come-along and try to work in their styles. But somehow I doubt we'll be seeing a Cobain-style end for either Mr.Black or Mr.Tankian.
Dave Grohl himself has only seen his career soar higher-and-higher since the death of Nirvana. Not only has he featured heavily in the overall world-wide success of his band: the Foo Fighters during the last few years, but he's also been around elsewhere and done some drummin' for other bands like Queens of the Stone Age.
The man's a saint! And no doubt he played a big-part in Nirvana's success for all those 'thumps' and 'dumps' with the drum-sticks and his long-hair.
If any one man will be remembered it deserves to be him. And not some big fat over-payed has-been like Fred Durst. But of course, we'll still remember Kurt Cobain too. Even in 2014, 20 years after that incident back in '94.
Got any other ideas?
The way I see it; Nirvana are virtually irreplaceable.
We may never see another band who will come-along and have an effect on music anywhere near as great as there's was back 10 years ago. Not in our life-time!
10 years from now we will only be looking at one or two bands that make us smile, along with Nirvana and few others while still trying to figure out if Cobain's death had any personal intention to it or not. All this amongst a see of cheap and un-talented teenagers taking the quick-route to success on the wrong side of music.
Long-live Nirvana in our memories forever!
"Secondly Tenacious D will not be remembered in 10 years. Nope. They will not influence other "comedy" bands. It's hardly original territory that they're treading at the moment. Sure they may have had Dave Grohl on drums, but that is firmly where the Nirvana connection ends. The thing about joke bands is that the joke wears very thin, very quickly, as anyone who's seen the Tribute video for the 200th time on Kerrang TV will testify."
I know exactly what you mean there! I got so-tired of 'Tribute' thanks to both Kerrang and MTV 2 playing it almost non-stop 24/7.
And I only got there album 6 days ago, and I'm already starting to tire of it! They are funny guys together - on TV - but I see what you mean about their jokes wearing thin very quickly.
But what about System of a Down? Surely we'll still remember them in 10 years??
Unplugged is fantastic, In Utero is very good. Nirvana rule. I was dancing to them all of last night.
The next Nirvana? You could say Limp Bizkit was...

At the present time you could probably name the number of truly influential bands in rock music on two hands. The more commercialised music becomes the less it seems to innovate, and the more it seems to remain the same. The current flavour of the month is zeitrock, watch as the majors sign up a horde of entirely adrogynous and inoffensive rock bands (yes that's you "the calling") and reap in the cash green crop. Of course once the wheels have come off a particular bandwagon, usually when all the majors and radio one have jumped on, everyone moves on a hypes up some other type of music.
