I recently started using eBay to sell some stuff, and I set up a PayPal account to increase my options regarding credit card payments.

Until recently, everyone had paid using either eBay online payment, or sent me a cheque/postal order.

I recently auctioned an old CD writer, and the winner was a guy in Ireland. He says he's sent me payment through PayPal, but my account shows nothing, and I'm not about to send the item off without payment.

I've e-mailed PayPal to find out what's going on, but they're taking their sweet time getting back to me; they say three business days for a reply, and today is the third day. I know they're a few hours behind us, but I'm getting a bit uptight about it now. He claims to have paid on Saturday when the auction closed, and the payment still doesn't show.

So basically, how long does a payment usually take to show up? I assumed it was instant. I also know you're supposed to get an e-mail telling you that you have cash waiting, but I haven't had that either.

Anyone offer any help/advice?

It's okay - does its job!

Still, it was on Watchdog the other night!

I was very dubious about it, because I'm a naturally suspicious person and you never know who you're dealing with. But I've had no problems so far.

I only signed up because I had to clear out some stuff from the spare room, and I didn't want to just throw it out when other people may have had use for it. But I haven't actually bought anything yet, only sold things - so far I've made around £400.

As for how it works... well, you need to register to bid for things, and if you want to sell you need to create a seller's account.

When you list an item for auction, you get charged a listing fee which depends on the starting price of your item, and a few other things. These are quite reasonable. If an item sells, you get charged a final value fee - this is a percentage of the final value, which decreases as the value gets higher.

You need to register a credit card with them or sign up for Direct Debit in order to sell, and if you register your bank account details, any payments made using eBay's online payment system, the money gets paid direct into your bank account if the buyer pays by credit card.

Cool, so hopefully you'll get the sale done :o)

Would you rate eBay highly then??? I've thought about selling a few things online, how does eBay work?

Haven't heard a thing from them, but he forwarded me an e-mail he got back from them. Turns out he mis-spelled my e-mail address and so the money wasn't claimed. I've asked him to send it again, to the right address!

Absolutely - I've already e-mailed him telling him that nothing shows up on the account, and said that I won't be sending it out until it does.

I said I hoped he would understand and be patient, and I've heard nothing back from him - which I thought was a little strange.

It may well be that he hasn't paid anything and was trying to get it for nothing, but although I'm usually wary, for the moment I am taking him at his word that he's paid.

But it won't leave my possession until the payment appears!

Failing that, I'll offer it to the next highest bidder, and if they don't want it, I'll re-list it.

I'm not to sure how paypall works, but I wouldn't send off the item just yet.

From my understanding, you should have already received an E-mail from paypal that someone is sending payment your account, but as you havn't got any notice of this, you can't be sure this guy has really done so, or if he has, done so correctly.

I'd E-mail him first stating you need to wait for comfirmation that he has infact paid. If he isn't conning you, he should easily accept this, but if he gets angered, it would imply he had tried to get your burner for nothing.

But don't send it out if your unsure.
