Everytime I play as Arsenal, despite my best editing efforts I hear Trevor Brooking (or what I believe to actually be somebody doing an impression of Trevor Brooking) talking about 'London', and 'Number 10' when Bergkamp gets the ball. Because of Konami, before I dared to play even a single kick of football, I changed all the English clubs' names so that they were correct. No more Aragon, Yorkshire, Lake District or Dublin...hello Man Utd, Leeds, West Ham and Aston Villa. I've spent about an hour editing the English flags, finding a fair few decent default templates for the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona...but really, should I have to? I begrudge having to check the stats of a player called Orange 0025. I hate hearing how Celt have had 58% of the possession. I detest the inability of the flag editor to get rid of that bloomin' stupid diamond so I can properly create the Liverpool crest. Why should I have to suffer for my virtual footballing fix when for the same price I can have Southampton complete with the last detail of stitching on their shorts...they're not even IN Pro Evo 2!
I have no idea why they don't have more league teams, and thus the option to play a proper domestic season. I have no idea why they can only buy one license that covers about a tenth of all the names, and can't even make up rubbishy alternatives for a whole nation. I don't know why I'm holding out on buying Fifa 2003, because it has everything I really need. Don't get me wrong, the engine in PES2 is every bit as lovely as I'd hope. Sure, the net seems a little stiffer so the goals look a little naffer. OK, there's no replays on demand. Alright, the graphics are a bit dull and wishy-washy, there aren't any in-game stats, the commentary is laughable and...
With Fifa 2003, you can play any one of about a dozen leagues, including our English one which has all the latest teams (even West Brom) with all the right names and haircuts. If they change their barnets, or they buy a new player, you can edit individuals and teams. You have the international sides with World Cups, European Championships and all the other major competitions to compete in, complete with qualifications. You've got Motty with Andy Gray, two of the most esteemed men in the business. You've got a fully licensed soundtracks, not two songs from a band that's not been around for donkey's years. And on top of all that...it's fun to play.
Yessir, for the first time when EA plaster 'all new gaming engine' it doesn't mean the arrows for set pieces are a different colour. Many are going so far as to say it's better than Pro Evo. I've had a quick go and I must say, it's a far cry from three years ago when holding sprint, forward and tapping the skill button was enough to get your right back past the opposition and around the flailing keeper. I'd definitely need a more extensive playtest to pass final judgement, but it's impressed me enough to make me want it. Plus, the graphics are lovely.
As seen in the adverts, you can tell it's Ryan Giggs just by seeing the way he jinks past defenders. In contrast to the dark and dreary pitches of Konami's offering, Fifa has huge stadiums packed with screaming fans, huge floodlights and beautiful green grass. The players could all pass off as humans, and if you squint you could be watching the real thing...excluding the funny nameplates, and power bars. There are oodles of stats to look at both in-game and in-season, or cup, or whatever. You can get a fully interactive replay whenever you want, and save it right to your memory card.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2 may have the beautiful game, but it isn't THE beautiful game. Sure it's great fun to play, challenging, and better than last time...but after four bites at the cherry, maybe Konami should have got the hang of it by now. For the first time, it's outssold the mighty EA in the first week, but they're still as stubborn as ever with regards to shelling out on licenses for player and team names. The bloomin' game's even sponsored by Umbro!
Some die-hards think Fifa is too flashy, too...American. Well I think Fifa is what a football game should be - fully authentic, fully customizeable, and fully fun.
I love my PES2 to death, but if I have to see some cuckoo made up name for Bayern Munich when I'm in the Master League one more time, I swear to God I'll trade it in for Fifa 2003.
PES2 and/or Fifa 2003 owners...your thoughts on this turf war? Haha...get it? Turf?
Thanks for reading.
