Jackie Moon tries with all his effort to get the crowds back to Flint, this usually leading to the funniest parts in the Film, we see him wrestle a bear, try jump over a group of women on roller skates, and even host the Flint Tropics Mega Bowl. Early on the Tropics sign an ex- NBA champion, who eventually becomes the main coach and helps the Tropics start to win and look like a team that could make the top 4. While the plot is not why you should watch this film, I am still not going to ruin it for anyone wanting to find out what happens. Instead you should watch it for Will Ferrell doing what he does best. Making you laugh and having some great quotes that you will be repeating in the pub time and time again.
It is always a hard job for any film that Will Ferrell stars in to match up to Anchorman. It was the first time most people recognised his talent for being a good actor and a funny person. Blades of Glory and Talladega Nights were both excellent films that I have seen time and time again, but they still didn’t quite make it to the Anchorman height. Each film always seems to take something from Ron Burgundy and his misfit crew, such as the 70’s period we see Jackie Moon running riot in throughout this film. So the big question; is Semi-Pro as good as Anchorman, in my opinion and everyone else I have spoken to about this film. No. In fact I don’t think it meets the same standard as his previous films.
Now I know everyone probably wants to know what it lacks, or why it just is not as good as his older films, and I have to say that Will Ferrell is great in it, he is funny and a strong character that people will enjoy watching. I think it is his entourage. When you have two or three comedy greats in a film, it is always going to be funnier than having one, and Andre 3000 from Outkast. Not taking anything from his performance as a cocky player who is the Tropics star player. He just is not funny, and the only humour in the film comes from Will Ferrell. Obviously comedy is all about opinions and some of you may find other characters funnier than I did, but it seems to be a common trend with people I have spoken to and shred views that the above statement is pretty accurate.
So, on the whole it is a fairly standard plot, with Will Ferrell playing a funny character very well. Some good performances from the other cast members but none of them really adding to the comedy in the film. So it is the kind of film that is enjoyable to watch and with Jackie Moon being present most the time, you will chuckle to yourself pretty regularly.
I would recommend watching the film if you’re a fan of comedy films, if you like Will Ferrell, or even if you just want something that is easy to watch and enjoyable. Not one to buy, I would tell everyone to rent it first and if you really like it, then buy it, because we all know that if you like a Will Ferrell film, the more you watch it, the funnier it is. I did watch Semi-Pro a couple of times just to see if my opinion changed but on this account it remained the same.
So a good film, with some nice comedy moments and good acting. Well worth watching, but do not expect this to be the film that finally beats Anchorman.
