It takes quite a lot for a film to be labelled "genius", and still have good Dvd extras. This edition of The Usual Suspects IS genius, and has GOOD Dvd extras, and you WILL buy it. Because you just have too.
"I think we owe it to ourselves to salvage a little dignity...."
Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey) is in a Los Angeles interrogation room, telling the story of how he and 4 other criminals (Kevin Pollak, Stephen Baldwin, Benicio Del Toro and Gabriel Byrne) came together, despite their wishes. Cue one of the most mysterious film characters of all time, in a name you'll never forget: Keyser Soze. No-one has ever seen him, and can never recall his voice, and he only communicates through a lawyer (Pete Postelthwaite). He forces The Usual Suspects into stealing a large sum of drug money, and the combination of this and what actually happens in real time between Kint and a detective (Chazz Palminteri) makes The Usual Suspects a timeless film, and a film you'll want to see over, and over again. And will quote from, over and over again.
"How can you shoot the devil in the back? What if you miss?"
They couldn't have done better on the casting. Benicio Del Toro is a scene-stealer, and shows his acting skill before his Oscar-winning fame in Traffic (2001); Byrne, Baldwin and Pollak also give us an array of very memorable characters, Postelthwaite is excellent, despite being in just two scenes, and Chazz Palminteri also puts in some great acting, as what could be called the only "real good guy" in the film. The best performance, however, is from Kevin Spacey, who is outstanding in his portrayal of a cripple who, despite his petty theft, is in the wrong place at the wrong time. His performance earned him the huge respect he has as an actor, and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role.
"What we have to do is think.... think back"
It's great behind the acting, too. The score is mystifying, and adds a great touch to the film's atmosphere. The Editing is clever, with a great Montage sequence at the film's clever ending. The script is excellent, and has some truly genius ideas that haven't been seen in films before. The main plot will stick in your mind for a while, and there are some sub-plots (even a love story) that make the 2 hours themselves enjoyable. AND I haven’t mentioned the great action scenes, all this proved by the Best Original Screenplay Oscar Christopher McQuarrie earned. This also came from the fantastic ending that will force you to see how predictable you think films are, and will make you skip back to the beginning, and see it all over again. All of this, directed by the very young Bryan Singer (X-Men), who has a lot of time to come to prove himself further.
"Back when I was in that Barbershop Quartet, in Skoke, Illinois....."
It's worth buying the Dvd for ownership of the film alone, considering you'll watch it more than any other. But, there are still great extras. On the two-disc Special Edition, we have 4 interesting featurettes, one dedicated to the character of Keyser Soze alone, Deleted scenes, a hilarious gag reel, and more. But, best of all, there’s a hilarious commentary from Director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie. There’s not much more input you could want.
"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist...."
To put simply, it's one of the best crime films around - possibly one of the best films ever made. It can be watched over and over again without boredom, and you’ll need to have it in some form, even a video. But, with brilliant Dvd extras, and snazzy looking packaging, it’s now one the best Dvd packages around, and deserves a place in everyone’s home. Class.
"Flip yo, for real...."
