The graphics on this game are far from impressive. The game looks more like an Xbox 360 launch title than a brand new release. In fact compared to impressive new titles such as Namco's Soul Calibur IV it looks pretty dated. On the plus side there are no frame rate issues whatsoever and the game does seem to run at a serious rate at times. The graphics can only be described as a let down, especially as the both the Moto GP games look fantastic on the Xbox 360.
The Moto GP games were in my opinion amongst the hardest games I have ever played and led to more frustration than enjoyment.I had hoped this would be the area in which SBK 08 would really shine but unfortunately it doesn't.Its not quite as ridiculously difficult as the Moto GP games but it is still quite hard.Worst of all though, its just not much fun to play. There are five game modes : Arcade,Basic,Advanced,Simulation and Extreme.Arcade mode is pretty much as you would expect with big wheelies and over the top slides in corners etc.The Simulation,Advanced and Extreme modes allow you set up the bike with gear ratios, suspension settings etc.I found these modes very hard and a pretty joyless experience to be honest.Basic mode is the most playable of the five modes being not too over the top or overly difficult.
There is one nice touch and that is the crashes. When you crash it quickly switches to a TV replay like mode with the World Superbike logo introducing the clip as though you were watching a Eurosport broadcast. When the clip finishes you return straight back into the game but remounted back on the bike.
The game is mainly designed to be played in the third person view which is all well and good but it is very difficult to see upcoming corners as your bike is blocking the view.If you play the game in the first person view (as in looking over the handlebars of the bike) you can see the apex of the corners better but the bike is much harder to control.
With some of the very good racing games already available on the Xbox 360 (such as Forza Motorsport 2 & PGR 4) it is very difficult to recommend SBK 08.It is inferior to titles such as those in every way and being a new release it is around £30 to buy.At a budget price I suppose it could be worthy of consideration but then only if you are a die hard Superbike fan.If you merely just enjoy the occasional racing game then SBK 08 is not for you.
A mediocre 5/10 from me.
