The Rock

‘The Rock’ takes its name from one of the most famous landmarks on the west coast of America, Alcatraz. One of the tightest security prisons that America has ever built. With a dynamic cast comprising of Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery, The Rock has a lot to offer in acting capability. The movie was first released around 1996 I believe, so can this movie sit up there amongst the latest blockbuster hits?

The movie centres on an act of potential terrorism from a group of ex soldiers. The group run by a commander that’s got a huge chip on his shoulder capture the now tourist attraction of Alcatraz, holding all tourists hostage. After capturing the island, many rockets filled with dangerous VX gas are strategically positioned in various points around the island all aimed to the nearby city of San Francisco. Potentially the rockets could kill thousands upon thousands of people. With the group of ex soldiers in a strong position the FBI need to play their trump card.

As a well known and established actor Seas Connery enters the scene as an ex SAS and disavowed British Intelligence officer John Patrick Mason. Who is currently serving the rest of his time locked behind bars in the U.S. Allegedly the only known inmate to have successfully escaped the high security prison years previously. Mason is the last person the FBI want to help them, but proves to be the only person with very valuable information on Alcatraz. It’s the FBI’s only hope to secure the lives of all Americans, apart from paying the ransom asked for. When does the ransom ever get paid in a movie anyway? Where would the fun be in that!

Nicholas Cage plays a chemical specialist, Stanley Goodspeed. A swat when it comes to anything relating to chemicals, in particular VX gas. His skills are recognised by the FBI and are thrown onto the playing field to aid in the situation as an expert in his field. The two team up to provide a love/hate type of duo, which is great to watch, offering elements of humour in an action packed story. A few cheesy lines here and there but you’ve got to love them!

A really great cast sees this movie to reach a great peak; a good storyline and appropriate suspense to keep you intrigued until the end. A fast paced action movie that boasts a very solid story line. One of the great classics that you have to watch still looks good next to all the new releases with far superior visual effects!

Sheer Brilliance 9.5/10
