Owen Wilson who is actually a homeless waster who spends his days showering on the beach and taking unfinished food dreams of going to Canada, where for only $300 he can start a new life and make something of himself. He learns that the boys are after someone to help and takes the role of their Bodyguard. Initially Drillbit steals the occasional thing from the boy’s house and soon shows that he has no previous fighting knowledge and is a fake. The naïve kids believe all of Drillbit’s lies for a long duration until they start to suspect he is not really who he claims. While trying to show he is in fact the previous bodyguard for Sly Stallone he infiltrates the school and meets one of the teachers there. Opening a new corridor in the story, Drillbit is now lying to the kids and the woman he is falling in love with.
Being a comedy you can expect things to go wrong in all directions and the use of slapstick comedy is fairly frequent, with people falling over, getting hit and other various harmful things. Owen Wilson plays Drillbit Taylor brilliantly; he is entertaining all the way through and retains the witty charm and smooth talking we all expect from him in a film. Some of the best comedy moments spawn from one of the three friends who are on the large side; his weight is used as comedy and tends work while being cruel.
While it is no Anchorman or Wedding Crashers in terms of memorable laughter you and your mates will talk about down the pub, it is still an enjoyable film that even a younger audience will understand and find amusing. Fairly predictable and shallow it does lack something, I think probably the fact it is more of a kid’s comedy than an adult one the jokes are not as hard hitting or funny, but as mentioned earlier the comedy stems from falling over or someone being hit.
Still a pretty entertaining film that is worth a rent if you’re running low on films and fancy a chuckle. Not Wilson’s best performance due to him being restricted in language and content, but what he has been given he delivers well and you will find yourself relatively satisfied with your choice in film at the end. No big surprises as to how it all ends up, but then most comedy’s are not the hardest to predict. I would recommend renting this to anyone who enjoys Owen Wilson and light hearted comedy
