I thought, seeing as I'd like to set up my own sometime down the line, I'd like to know whats going one inside :o).

are vaguelly decent guides as to how the internet and web servers do their jobs. They're easy to follow, but don't go into much depth.
When you say you want a web server, do you actually want a machine plugged directly into an ISP serving, say, commercial web pages, or an account with such a machine, or just a program to muck around with at home? The former involves a huge cost in expense and expertise, the middle is merely very expensive and quite technical while the latter is free :O)
