Scientists are unsure if DCIS can turn into cancer. There is still a lot of research needed (www.dcis.info) so maybe one day someone would be able to tell me whether my mastectomy was really necessary. I would never have taken the risk of keeping my breast knowing I could have gone on to develop cancer. The doctor did say I have some cancerous cells, so did I have cancer and DCIS?. I have tried to discuss this with my specialist but to him it doesn’t seem important as the treatment is the same and he is far too busy to talk about it. Now after all my treatment it is kind of irrelevant. One day it may be more relevant once the true nature of DCIS is better understood. To me and my health record I had DCIS which is cancer and DCIS not being cancer is hard to imagine. Though for a medical for Job interviews I’ll swallow it.
