The timeline of the films is:
Red Dragon
Silence of The Lambs
Hannibal
Now, they made Silence first. Then Hannibal. And a big part of the plot of Hannibal, the reason he was identified and caught by Verger was Hannibal having 6 fingers on his hand.
"He's wearing a glove to conceal it" hisses Verger, having recieved an X-ray from a European doctor in Hannibal.
Now they couldn't very well go back and change Silence of The Lambs to give him a CGI extra finger, I understand that.
Yet in Red Dragon, set before Hannibal yet made after - he still only has 5 fingers.
So what then? He sprouted his exta finger between hanging up the phone after talking about "having an old friend for dinner" at the end of Silence and appearing in Florence in Hannibal? Cos he sure dont have extra fingers in Silence.
But if that's the case, how did they get an x-ray of his hand during his stay at Cheasapeake Mental Hospital?
Silly little inconsistencies.
Hmmm...
I'm impressed.
Apparently the actor playing the puppet, was told that he had gotten the staring role in Stuart Little. He blabbed to Hopkins on set about this, who in turn was so furious that he'd lost out on getting his dream role, he decided to make the producer and director, cut the scenes featuring the plucky puppet even though he knew doing so would seriously damage the film's credibility.

It's not fun for me either but lessons must be learned.
Now I feel dirty inside my mind
