Present system is XP 32-bit 4Gb RAM. (This is only recognized as 3Gb on a 32-bit OS)
The present pagefile settings are as follows and are 'system managed':
Currently allocated: 3078 MB
Recommended: 4605 MB
Are these values acceptable or should a 'custom size' be set? If so, any idea what the initial and maximum size should therefore be?
There seems to be a 'rule of thumb' which suggests the initial size should be 1.5 times the size of installed RAM and the maximum should be 3 times RAM. However there does seem to be additional factors involved. I would appreciate any suggestions :-)
To be honest though, I'm not even convinced its worth the effort of worrying about. Theres plenty of articles stating you should do this and that with the paging file and how it'll increase performance. You rarely see any with actual statistics supporting this boost though.
And more interestingly, I've read on the msdn forums in the past that XP feels it can ignore your manual settings if it doesnt like them. So maybe control is only an illusion anyway. :)
