Eugh, just found out my burntout Hdd was a Mode 3 (took long enough) apparently Hdds are now on Modes 5/6 so the one I had is pretty old...

How can I tell what mode the hdd is without looking at the drives booklet, also, this drive seems to have gone out of production as soon as it was given to us as theres little info on it online.

It's a Seagate Barracuda, not sure about the Part number but i'm sure they'll all be the same.

Anyway, any help will be great, thanks.

Whoa..my Dada told me they were on 5/6, first bit of hardware info hes ever known I think...i'm now in a state of shock.

Cheers everyone for your help. I thought i'd checked my BIOS, obviously not well enough :)

Yep mode 5 (ata 100) and mode 6 (ata 133) not sure if ata 166 is mode 7 though?, it is just the way the older motherboards see the faster drives before these modes came in i think.

Have a look in your BIOS - if its auto detecting the drive it will probably show what mode its running in. And like another poster, I've not heard of modes beyond 4.

Modes 5/6?? I must be out of touch with the movment of Hard Drives, as I'm pretty sure they are only on Mode 4.
