To make matters worse, there are going to be some stupid new characters in it too.
Now, I’m not really that bothered about this remake movie to be honest, because I was never a big fan of the Magic Roundabout, apart from that guy with the big tache and the spring stuck up his butt who was kinda cool.
However, not content with remaking The Magic Roundabout, Bill & Ben, Planet of the Apes, The Italian Job etc, there’s now rumours that there is going to be a brand new series/remake of the best ever TV programme, The Persuaders. Now this does get me bothered and this time it’s personal, and so I say to this, “IS NOTHING SACRED!”
The Persuaders is a classic old crime fighting TV show from the era of The Saint, The Avengers, The Prisoner, Jason King etc, and although made in 1971, way before my time, I bought the series dvds some time ago because I think Roger Moore is the new messiah and thought I’d try the series out. It has turned out to be my favourite programme ever and a very wise purchase, but now its good name could be besmirched by a duff remake.
The original has two charismatic leads, Roger Moore as the cultured upper crust aristocrat Lord Brett Sinclair, and Tony Curtis as the streetwise, self-made millionaire from the Bronx, Danny Wilde, two very differing characters who get into loads of capers. They are drawn together by a retired judge to fight crime and to bring to justice criminals who had managed to avoid legal prosecution in the past on technicality. However, will a remake ever be able to get a better duo that Moore & Curtis? A definite NO is the answer.
Unlike most of today’s shows, the emphasis of the programme lay in the realm of fun. The humour of the series is the most important aspect of its appeal to me, and much of it was due solely to the acting style, witty banter and spontaneity of the two leads.
Despite the fact that not many were made (only 24, because it wasn’t a success in America), it’s a great show and classic chalk and cheese stuff, as the mismatched globetrotting and resourceful yet irresponsible international playboys fight crime whilst getting into all sorts of capers. There are girls, cool cars (Moore has an Aston Martin & Curtis has a Ferrari), fisty-cuffs, adventure, action, exotic locations, cool music and plenty of tongue-in-cheek humour with Moore recounting many anecdotes about his stuffy old ancestors.
Every episode is fantastic and filled with great comic moments, one of my favourite bits emphasising the character differences is in an episode where the dynamic duo are out camping in the forest. We see Curtis going very much back to nature and sleeping in an old tent and not much else and wanting to go out and catch fish, but then the camera pans over to good old Roger Moore’s tent; a huge family sized mansion tent with TV, electric blanket, chandelier, freezer with fish inside, oven, silver tea set etc. Classic.
If the new series is made and turns out to be crap like The Avengers film, then I’m never going to watch new TV programmes ever again. Ever.
On the other hand though, the new series could turn out really good, provided they cast the right people (but the chances are slim), but the show will never really recapture the magic that the original has, so in the end, why bother?
What classic show are they going to murder next? Coming soon, Fawlty Towers the remake. (Reminds me of the American version of One Foot In The Grave, which I think had Bill Cosby as Victor Meldrew).
Btw, the complete Persuaders boxset can be bought for a mere £59.99 at Play.com. For that price you get all 24 fantastic episodes. It certainly makes an ideal Christmas present for a loved one, or yourself.
