Looks like Microsoft are really trying to get their XBox 2 out before PS3. This might be significant if they manage to pull it of, but then again it has to be what people want. The DC had a big head start over PS2 - but people held out for PS2.
So will the XBox2 be a bit of a rush job then? Like Windows ME?
If they DID release the XBox2 first, then Sony would be laughing I think. In the past, they've always released after Sega (PSX followed MegaDrive+CD, PS2 followed Saturn/Dreamcast), and Sony always knew what they were having to beat. Nintendo were always in the best place of all, because it always looked like they waited for Sony to get their console out and then released theirs 12 months later.
So now Sony are going to get a good look at the competition before releasing the PS3? Maybe. I have a feeling, though, that with current development schedules that Microsoft and Sony are going to do another head to head release around Christmas some time in the future.
