With Rockstar basing their new game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in the 80s, it won't be long before other developers follow suit. Trends like this happen all the time; a rash of Racers, a barrel-load of RPGs, a shedload of Shoot 'em ups.

So here's a guess at the upcoming gaggle of 80's themed games that could be hitting the shelves 20 years too late:

Worzel Gummidge: The Scatterbrook Missions

Starting from your base in Ten Acre Field, you accept missions from your allies (Sue and John) to put an end to an evil nemesis who's been eating all the cakes and drinking all the tea from Scatterbrook Farm (Una Stubbs). Making sure you select the correct head for each mission from the nice warm barrel in the barn is vital to your success, mission tips can be fed to you via the robin in your stomach, and the trend for teaching gamers new languages like AlBhed continues with Worzeleeze. The final showdown with Crowman is set to kick Sons of Liberty into touch as a story clincher.

Danger Mouse: Agent Under A Postbox In Mayfair

With a definitive twist on the First Person Squeaker mode, DM:AUAPIM will become THE definitive anti-crime game for the PS2. It's two player only, and forces players to work together in co-op mode, the only problem being who gets to be Danger Mouse and who gets to be Penfold. Baron Greenback is planning to blow up the world with his sidekick, Nero, and only you (and your sister, brother, dad, neighbour, kid you brought home from school just to complete this game) can stop him. "He's the greatest, he's fantastic, whenever there is danger he'll be there....DangerMouse!"

Pipkins: Puppets Strike Back

Relive the horror of bummie puppets on the loose that terrorised many a tot in the early 80's. Something is going on in the puppet store behind your back, and it's your job to sort it out. Early preview code shows that Hartley Hare is looking as evil and ragged as we remember him, and the pigs are particularly frightening. Rumours in the industry hint at Silent Hill 3 being canned due to the release of this game in the near future.

Rainbow: Rated R

How Acclaim managed to get the licencing rights to one of the most popular TV series of the 80s is a mystery. How they managed to turn it into a beat 'em up is anyone's guess. They're staying pretty tight lipped about the final code, but rumour has it that you'll finally get to see Zippy and George's legs, Geoffrey has been turned into a robot character with the aid of a cardboard box and some tinfoil, and they've redefined the meaning of 'three way bout' when it comes to the hardcore ring action involving Rod, Jane and Freddy. The release has been set back a bit because Bungle kept melting under the studio lights as they were trying to lay down some motion capture.

Kojak vs Ironside

OK, so it's 70's and 60's but hey, Starsky and Hutch is already in development. There's a case to be cracked, and you're up against the clock, the DA is on your bosses back and you've got 24 hours. Will your supply of lollipops last that long? Can you beat the deadline before your wheelchair bound nemesis solves all the clues? It's Tomb Raider with a bald head and less bouncy bits, but nevertheless a surefire hit for all the wannabe detectives out there. You're backed up by Bobby Crocker and Detective Stavros throughout your case, and you can hamper Ironside from time to time with your special move (jamming a lollipop stick between the spokes of his wheels).

As you can see, the future of gaming looks considerably brighter, especially when you consider that in 10 years time they'll be making games out of 90s nostalgia, including such greats as Harry Enfield and Chums, Little and Large, The Generation Game and, erm, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (again).
